PICK OF THE WEEK: Iron & Wine – Saturday, December 8th – The Paramount Theater Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine) and his group of travelling minstrels are reinventing folk music for the 21st Century. In the tradition of Dylan and Guthrie, he is a master songwriter and guitarist and as he matures as an artist his ability to compose intricate pieces of music becomes more and more clear.

His most recent release, The Shepherd’s Dog, retains all of Beam’s hallmarks while stretching the boundries of his sound. The tempo is ratched up on some songs while on others he utilizes his full band to add just the right details to the quietest moments of the most mellow songs. It is simply a fantastic record and is sure to make many writers best of lists this year.

Beam will bring his full band to The Paramount on Saturday and tickets are going fast. I wouldn’t wait to get to the door to buy yours as they very well may be gone.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
