St. Paul & The Broken Bones, the Alabama-bred group gaining popularity fast among retro-soul music fans, faced a crowd full of excited fans at the Fillmore Auditorium last week in Denver. Wasting no time before getting straight to the theatrics that make this band stand apart from others in the same genre, lead vocalist Paul Janeway practically floated onstage behind his bandmates, donning a long cloak and a solemn expression. His dramatic start to the show was greeted with loud applause, as this is what fans expect from Janeway. The night flew by with old favorites from the band’s first record, Half the City.  Later in the Night, we heard new music from Sea of Noise, just released in September.

Highlights of the night included Janeway’s infamous falsetto that made an appearance on nearly every song, as well as an unexpected Radiohead cover, and a three-song encore to end the night. Hopefully next time this band comes through Denver, we’ll see more music fans buying tickets to see them. The Fillmore was only about half-full and, with the balcony closed, it seemed even less crowded.

After growing up in Missouri listening to vintage records of The Allman Brothers, Carly Simon, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, I was hooked to the live music scene and the contagious sounds of guitar licks and soulful lyrics. After moving to Colorado, I've been contributing to Listen Up Denver! as a freelance photographer and writer. I've also started a side project, KellYeah Photography, which gives me the opportunity to pair my passion for live music with my creativity and love of being around people. Aside from photography and writing, I'm an avid hiker of Colorado 14ers and a beer enthusiast.
