Last Sunday marked the 54th sold-out show for Widespread Panic at Red Rocks. They have owned the venue’s sell-out record for years and with each year’s run of three shows at the end of June, they just keep pushing it out of other band’s reach. The tradition has not only created an untouchable record for the books but, more importantly, an annual family reunion for some of the best fans in the music world. Sunday’s shows was nothing short of a love fest for this colorful group of people. It was clear that the band was feeling the love too as they dusted off “Galleon” and “E of G,” both missing in action since the loss of original guitar player, the lingering lead Michael Houser, 15yrs ago. Members of the crew had been spotted wearing “Grease” shirts in honor of the late Col. Bruce Hampton and the band appeared for the encore wearing them as well and proceed to pay tribute to the legendary bandleader with a song he loved, Cream’s “I’m So Glad.” They say you should “never miss a Sunday show” and I am so glad I took this advice to heart.
