Thievery Corporation brought a massive show to a nearly sold-out Red Rocks on Sunday night and wow’ed everyone in attendance.  After a rockin’ opening set from DJ Nickodemus that had everyone on the rocks up and dancing, Ghostland Observatory took the stage and things got a little out of hand.  Thomas Turner’s thumping beats and Aaron Behrens’ high tenor singing combined with one of live musics best laser spectacles, made for a feverish dance party that raged on even as a light rain fell.  Their set included fan favorites “Sad Sad City,” Give Me The Beat,” “Glitter,” and “Miracles,” and pushed the energy all the way to fever pitch for the headliners, the mighty Thievery Corporation.

Thievery’s stage setup was very lounge-like complete with a chaise lounge, oriental rugs, a plush chair, and even two chandeliers that hung above the group as they performed.  Hitting on material from throughout their career like “Culture of Fear,” “Radio Retaliation,” “The Numbers Game,” “33 Degrees,” “Vampires” and “Sound The Alarm,” the group showed their versatility as the genre hopped from Caribbean to middle Eastern influences smoothly and effortlessly.  Throughout the night an extremely varied cast of singers. Natlaia Clavier, Boston’s Mr. Lif, powerhouse DC reggae vocalists and longtime Thievery collaborators Rootz and Z, and another longtime member of the family Loulou Ghelichkhani, took turns fronting the band on stage.  It was a night for the history books on Red Rocks that those present will not soon forget.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
