Another town, another place, Punk Rock Saves Lives time on the road supporting artists and our shared causes was given a big boost by our friends in Vegas at both the Punk Rock Hoedown and Punk Rock Bowling. Now let’s grab a cold one or three at Ratio Beerworks during The Second Annual Punk Rock Saves Lives Festival.
The punk/ska scene has one of the most supportive and loyal fan bases amongst all musical genres and I think there is a simple reason for this: honesty. We are an honest people, unashamed of our scars and proud of our triumphs.
Nostalgia: A sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. Nostalgia has been shown to counteract loneliness, boredom, and anxiety. It makes people more generous to strangers and more tolerant of outsiders. A quick way to induce nostalgia is through music.
Back in 2020 in celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary and the commemorative reissue of their celebrated landmark record Group Sex, the Circle Jerks planned to return to the stage for the first time in over a decade. Then a little thing called COVID forced the tour to be canceled as theaters went dark. Finally last Saturday the tour stop at The Ogden Theatre happened and we got to celebrate the 40th anniversary of not only their first album but the second album as well.
Sundays L.A. Witch show at The Bluebird was the bands last show of the year. 2 months, 2 countries, 30 states, lots of COVID tests and bus chasing had ensued since the tour began. The band felt lucky to have been able to play all 33 shows, but those us who ventured out that night for the show were really the lucky ones.
Seven-inch split albums were originally done on vinyl, with music from one artist on one side of the record and music from a second artist on the opposite side. Since the early 1980s, the format has been used widely by independent record labels and punk bands. Friday nights “Boston to Berkeley II” tour had the same benefits of a split EP.
Hot Rod Rock & Rumble is the Rocky Mountain Region’s premier Kustom Kulture festival. Kustom Kulture is the name for the art, vehicles, and fashions of people who drove and built custom cars, trucks and motorcycles in the US from the 50’s through today.
Things have changed a lot since Punk began; instead of clubs with a capacity of under 200 people, long established bands share lineups that fill venues like Sculpture Park; which offers a capacity of more than 5,000. Gone are the stinky, graffiti covered bathrooms with floors so soft you feel like you might fall through when you use the urinals, replaced by a long line of porta-potties. Ok I guess not everything is necessarily better, but I think most people (those who weren’t preoccupied with proving they they’re punker than thou) both young and old enjoyed being brought together by music and good beer to hang out with the dancing sculptures for a day.
Punk Rock Saves Lives is a non-profit organization helping focus on health concerns, equal rights, human rights, and more. Knowing how difficult the deafening silence of this pandemic is PRSL organized a musical livestream last weekend. Back on March 16th Gov. Jared Polis ordered Colorado bars, and restaurants closed due to COVID-19. Also included in this order were all movie theaters, concert venues, and nightclubs.
