Yonder Mountain String Band – January 1st – Boulder Theater

Bluegrass fans were very excited for night three of Yonder Mountain String Band’s Boulder Theater run, which included Jerry Douglas and a long list of fun and surprising 80s cover songs. Allie’s silly fast fiddle reminded us she is more than vocals, and the entire band reminded us why they can hold the attention of the Boulder Theater four nights in a row.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats – August 26th – Syntax Physic Opera

Everyone in the Syntax Physic Opera was sharing smiles, feeling lucky for scoring tickets to one of the last minute shows announced by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats before they head out on a lengthy domestic and international tour. At the end of the first song, Rateliff thanked us for being there and commented that they’d be playing nothing but the hits; he then laughed and said, “That’s been a joke for a long time, but now it works.”

Listen Up Denver! had the pleasure of speaking with Darrell Scott ahead of his Colorado mini-tour with Tim O’Brien in support of their 2013 album release “Memories and Moments.” Darrell is a stunning artist who is as at home writing, singing, and performing his own songs as he is playing guitar for artists like Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Robert Plant as a member of the Rock legend’s “Band of Joy.” His songs have been covered by a wide range of artists and he has released 11 albums, including three with Tim O’Brien.

Trombone Shorty – December 27th – Ogden Theatre

There were a lot of people in Denver looking for a funk release on Friday night, perhaps from holiday stress or just overindulging, and the Ogden Theater had just the remedy. The crowd represented a broad mix of music lovers, from younger folks looking for a dance party to go along with their many beers, to much older folks who looked like they’d seen been to their share of New Orleans Jazz Fests. The crowd never stopped moving as the high-energy band moved through perhaps two dozen songs.

The Greencards – June 10th – The Soiled Dove

The Greencards stellar set on Friday night ranged from the fast-picking “Rivertown,” to the freaky “Avenue,” to the achingly beautiful “Ghost of Who We Were,” and they also featured a number of songs off their new album ‘Brick.’ Carol Young’s voice was sweet and pitch-perfect, and the band’s high energy performance wowed the crowd.
