About Author: Brian Turk

Description
Brian Turk grew up in the shadow of the Catskill Mountains, near Woodstock, NY. He comes from a family of music lovers, audiopliles, Dead Heads and avid concert goers. The musical magic that can only be created in the Catsklills, both past and present, is what Brian cosiders the epicenter of his music addiction. The music of The Band, and most recently The Levon Helm Band, is the soundtrack of home for him. Brian's mother took him to his first concert at 5years old...it was Johnny Cash and Roseanne Cash at Jones Beach Amphitheatre. For Brian, music is a family affair. He feels the same way about live music...we all convene to celebrate together. Brian's writing life started when he wrote his favorite author, southern fiction writer Clyde Edgerton, a fan letter at age 13. When most kids were idolizing baseball players and television, he was worshipping writers and musicians. The two became friends and Clyde shared his craft with Brian. The next year Brian attended Duke University's Young Writers Camp. This is the extent, of what Brian considers, his “formal” training in writing. From then on his goal was to capture snapshots of life through words. Brian has been involved with live music in various facets over the years, and combined with his enthusiasm and love for Denver's music scene, he creates a vivid description of what he sees and hears. If you see him out at a show, dancing with a notebook in hand, say hello.

  • There are some jobs you can’t apply for, there are opportunities you can’t hunt down, and there are seats at the table you just can’t pull out for yourself. Colorado drummer Mark Levy taking his seat behind the kit during Phil Lesh’s three night run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester New York this week is an opportunity of a lifetime and a job for which Levy is well suited.

CRB has nothing to do with Black Crowes, but defines itself independently with a signature sound. Robinson is a Rock and Roll king but he is proudly wearing CRB like a crown while turning the tide decades into his career, and we are all grateful when he holds court. The Crowes may be no longer, but this next chapter for Robinson is going beautifully.

Wherever Kennedy is, or what he is doing, he is either absorbing the music of others, or creating his own.

  • The Church of Funkentology is a religion by definition but a social organization by design. Our mission is to promote, protect, preserve and spread The Funk. We are in our formative stages, but our long term goal is for The Church of Funkentology to be the definitive resource and temple for The Funk. Listening to Funk music, or any music for that matter, is our act of devotion. We worship in front of stages and speakers. There is no “god,” but a central spiritual power we turn to, and that is The Funk. The Funk is a spirit, an essence and a fiery force.

This “super-group” of a band is made of some of the best in the business, and every member is now prioritizing the once side-project. Not only is the band creating beautiful sounds, they are pulling on heart strings with some of the most passionate soul-music to have ever been made...and that is no exaggeration. According to co-founder Nigel Hall, this is more than a band, it’s home.

  • Sometimes a band’s name seems to mean nothing about the band, and sometimes it clearly means everything. Well, for Gipsy Moon, it’s all in the name. Hailing from the majestic, mountain town of Nederland, this young band captures the soul of their surroundings in the music they create. We had the pleasure of chatting with Gipsy Moon’s David Matters (banjo, guitar, vocals), who gave us some insight on the name and the spirit of this band who is "On the Road to ARISE."

  • The music scene in Colorado is about as diverse as it gets. Bluegrass, Rock, Funk, Soul, Roots and Reggae music are just some of the genres that are well represented locally…and often time’s bands pull from various genres in order to produce their signature sound. Bonfire Dub is one of those bands. Born in Vail, Bonfire Dub has a sound that represents a lot of what Colorado is about. Their performance will take you on a genre spanning journey, yet still allow you to stay in the same groove.

Not religious by any means,, but there is a special energy that I only experience at an Elephant Revival show, and everytime I see them I feel as if I “come-to” once the show is over. Well this night was no different, and I felt as if I were transported somewhere else for the duration of the performance, then slowly dropped back to the balcony of The Ogden once it was over.

The presence of Robert Walter’s 20th Congress soaked the walls with more soul. The night had a special meaning for local openers Fox Street Allstars, whose bond as a band has been solidified by trips to New Orleans Jazz Fest in search of Jazz, Funk and Soul. Lead guitarist James Dumm excitedly stated, “we have been listening to this band since we were 16. This guy means a lot to us.”
