Slightly Stoopid & Cypress Hill – April 20th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 4 min read

Ahh 4/20 in Colorado, you can smell it in the air! With the recent passing of Amendment 64 Colorado has become a hot spot for all things “4/20 friendly” and this past weekend was a prime example. From the first ever Cannabis Cup hosted on U.S. soil, to Snoop Lion’s performance Friday night, to this amazing line up; Colorado has taken their stance on recreational Marijuana use and the word is out. Last Saturday there was no better place to be than Red Rocks as Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill took to the stage to celebrate what appears to be our new state holiday.

Tiger Party – October 24th – Highland Tap & Burger

Estimated read time 2 min read

With contributing members from Lotus, Octopus Nebula, and The Malah, we weren’t 100% sure what Tiger Party was going to sound like but the product of their funky jam fusion was a thing of beauty for the ears. As the scents of French Fries and cannabis permeated the crowd, the band warmed the room with a rump shaking set that kept the dance floor moving the entire evening. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming Tiger Party shows because there ain’t no party like a Tiger Party.

Karl Denson’s Tribute To The Beastie Boys – June 22nd – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

The building was electric; with a packed house of super fans singing along to a laundry list of Beastie bests, Kyle, OG, and DeLa of Slightly Stoopid handled their roles as MCA, Ad Rock, and Mike D perfectly. Their showmanship undoubtedly outshined the stage lights as Karl Denson and the rest of his “Tiny Universe” provided the musical backdrop for the best tribute we’ve heard since MCA’s tragic passing.

BoomBox – May 5th – The Ogden

Estimated read time 3 min read

On the tail end of a day for The Derby and Cinco De Mayo, there was only one place to end up and continue to get away with a silly hat – The Ogden Theater – East Colfax’s premier music destination. And the hats were out! Derby hats, Sphinx hats, and Sombreros. The variety of hats matched the various collections of friends and music lovers, all of whom had made the conscious decision to attend the sold out, funktronic, groove fest that plays from the BoomBox.

The Frankenstein Brothers – April 25th – The Gothic

Estimated read time 5 min read

Tucked away down off South Broadway is what I like to call The Ogden’s prettier little sister, The Gothic Theatre. The Gothic simply is a little smaller and less run down than her sister venue, and while she may not reside as close to the city, at least you can find parking when you go to visit her. What type of party could this little sister throw that could drag all of us out of the woodwork to Englewood? How about one hosted by the Frankenstein Brothers – the love child of musical mad scientists That 1 Guy and Buckethead?

Levitate Festival – April 20th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 5 min read

It’s a bit of a drive for most of us out to the lovely city of Broomfield, but when the second annual Levitate Festival brought the likes of DJ Shadow and RUSKO, along with local producers Paper Diamond and Picture Plane, together on one stage, it was an easy drive to make. Bass rocked the walls of the small arena throughout the night and, as is becoming more and more common these days in the electronic music world, the visual displays were nothing short of extraordinary with Shadow’s “Shadowsphere” stealing the show.

Julian Marley and The Uprising – March 23rd – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

By the time The Uprising made their way on stage of The Boulder Theater, the room had filled up nicely with a striking mix of roots-reggae rockers. After an eccentric introduction from the token Marley herald of the evening, the six piece jam force that is The Uprising prepared the crowd for the evening with some fundamental reggae melodies. Once the bodies started moving, the herald returned to announce the reggae prince we had all gathered for, “Ladies and gentlemen I present to you JULIAN MARLEY!!!!!”

Donavon Frankenreiter – March 21st – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Bluebird Theater was peppered with a variety of happy, familiar faces for an evening with two singer-songwriters a few weeks back. Even though this was a Wednesday night show, the theatre felt surprisingly empty. This was after all, Jack Johnson’s good friend and protégé in town to deliver optimistic tunes with danceable melodies all the way from Kauai, Hawaii. In full island flavor, Donavon taught us how to “Move by Yourself” and we all enjoyed the hell out of the evening!

When Mike Pinto is in town you can count on a good group of people showing up for his show.
