The Gaslight Anthem – March 24th – Ogden Theatre

Jersey’s own Gaslight Anthem brought their “Get Hurt” tour to Denver’s Ogden Theatre last Tuesday night and people from all over the state showed up to rock with one of their favorite bands. The band was fresh off a show in Utah and came to rock Denver as hard as they could. As soon as the band hit the stage the Ogden faithful were cheering and yelling as loud as they could.

Widespread Panic – November 1st – 1stBank Center

After a blazing two set Halloween show full of covers and bust outs, Widespread Panic returned to the 1stBank Center on Saturday night for the second of three shows in the small arena. Energy was high and the band delivered a crowd pleasing set of classics like “Space Wrangler,” “Radio Child,” “Porch Song,” and “Ain’t Life Grand” along with a few well chosen covers including the debut of Joe Cocker’s “High Time We Went” and their long shelved take on The Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated.”

Summerland Tour (Spacehog, Eve 6, Soul Asylum, & Everclear) – July 31st – Ogden Theatre

Last Thursday attendees of the Summerland at Denver’s Ogden Theatre were treated to a taste of the ’90s; the throw-back show enrolled a handful the decade’s great Alternative Rock names, including Soul Asylum, Everclear, Eve 6 and Spacehog. Each band gave swift and solid performances, offering fans an array of their hits and a brisk jaunt down memory lane.

Robert Cray Band – June 21st – Arvada Center

Robert Cray, one of the world’s great Blues guitar icons, as well as the youngest musician to be inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, brought his unmistakable sound and incredible talent to the Denver area Friday evening, playing the intimate Arvada Center. The venue wasn’t packed, but it was mostly full, and the crowd of Cray fans, mostly over 35 years of age, were nothing less than enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

John Butler Trio – June 6th – Red Rocks Ampitheatre

Australia’s own “John Butler Trio” brought their folksy jams to Colorado’s world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday night, as part of a two show run here in the Denver area. Night one took place in Boulder, at the intimate Fox Theatre, while the Red Rocks show took on a spiritual feel even before Butler took the stage and continued throughout evening. JBT came out focused, playing a tight and emotionally raw show for their fans who responded in kind.

Black Label Society – June 1st – Ogden Theater

Zac Wylde, with his signature Bull’s Eye guitar and long blonde hair constantly hanging in his face, blew the crowd away with his smoking guitar chops and raw, powerful, sometimes even wicked sounding vocals. Intense energy, physical movement, great stage lighting, and a hard core intensity is what Black Label Society brings to the table at one of their shows. Mix that with stacks and stacks of Marshall amps as a backdrop and this band is a sight to behold.

Steve Vai & The Colorado Symphony – May 30th – Boettcher Concert Hall

Last Friday night was one of contrasts at Denver’s beautiful Boettcher Concert Hall as tuxedos sat next to tattoos, and the unmistakable sound of the electric guitar wove together seamlessly with the instruments of the Colorado Symphony. Chris Robinson Brotherhood – May 16th & 17th – Cervantes’ Ballroom

Denver’s Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom played host this past weekend to the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Robinson, whose other band, The Black Crowes, is taking a break after a solid year of touring, played to a packed house both nights with his bandmates Neil Casal, Adam MacDougall, Mark Dutton and Geaorge Sluppick. The bluesy, laid back rock band only repeated a couple of tunes over the two night run and mixed a few well chosen covers into the mix.

Slayer – May 10th – Fillmore Auditorium

The Fillmore played host on Saturday night to a trio of bands as well as a raucous crowd of concert goers ready to explode to some hard-hitting Heavy Metal. Though no one would be so bold as to call Exodus or Suicidal Tendencies “opening acts,” the two Cali-based bands did a great job warming up the crowd at the Fillmore–by the time Slayer hit the stage, the crowd was collectively foaming at the mouth. In the end, Slayer blew the crowd away, reminding fans and critics alike why they have managed to retain a fan base for 30+ years.
