Shaky Knees Festival – May 9, 10, 11 – Atlanta, GA

Estimated read time 9 min read

True sounds of American Alternative Rock rang from Atlanta, GA on May 9-11, 2014 at the Shaky Knees Festival. With headlining acts like The Violent Femmes, The Replacements, Alabama Shakes, and The National, the event drew large crowds and made good on the ticket, but the venue had ample space, sparing attendees the typical troubles of summer festival overcrowding. The line-up even featured some of Denver’s own musical talent, including singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov and Folk/Baroque Pop band Paper Bird.

When Brittany Howard and the rest of Alabama Shakes walked out onto the stage the Ogden simply exploded in deafening cheers and, as the band tore into “Hang Loose” from their 2012 debut album Boys & Girls, those cheers morphed into a chorus of voices singing along in unison. From start to finish, Alabama Shakes delivered a set that was a moving and powerful reminder of just how good they really are at delivering Blues soaked Garage Soul music that soaks in deep and satisfies nearly every primal craving.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Alabama Shakes & Michael Kiwanuka – The Ogden Theatre – March 9th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Alabama Shakes not-so-subtle blend of fiery Blues-Bock and hard-hitting Southern Soul has drawn comparisons to the Black Keys, the Drive-By Truckers, and even Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Michael Kiwanuka’s acoustic Blues-Folk sound and timeless soulful voice has been favorably compared with the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Van Morrison. This is a must see show!

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – August 6th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 7 min read

If there is one aging rocker whose legendary status is truly deserved, it’s Neil Young. He has excelled as part of the quartet Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, as a solo artist writing folk leaning acoustic tunes and epic electric rocks, and as the leader of music’s first Grunge band, Crazy Horse. He’s done it all and, despite a brain aneurysm that nearly killed him back in 2005, he’s still doing it and, if several of the new tunes he showcased on Monday night are any indication, doing it very, very well.
