Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers – August 8th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Botanic Gardens was beautiful on Monday night. Though storms swirled nearby, not a drop of rain fell on the gardens and the crowd was linen clad and ready for some great music. Though there was a smattering of younger faces in the bowl, the vast majority of the audience was over 40 and sat back, wine glass in hand, to enjoy some adult contemporary hits from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Boy, were they in for a surprise.

Shovels & Rope – June 17th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 4 min read

Mother Nature shined her light down on the Botanic Gardens last Wednesday night with the first rainfree evening in Denver in what felt like months. The gardens were beautiful as the dark clouds of a storm loomed to the South and, as evening took hold, the clouds lit up in a brilliant pink sunset. On stage, John Fullbright and the Charleston South Carolina, husband and wife, duo Shovels & Rope put on a dazzling show that is haunted in retrospect by the tragic events that took place in Charleston on this very evening.

Jimmy Cliff – July 28th – Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Botanic Gardens remained dry last Monday night when they played host to a sold-out crowd and one of the most passionate and soulful performers to ever come out of Jamaica: Mr. Jimmy Cliff. As is typical at The Gardens there were lavish spreads of rich creamy cheeses, perfectly ripe fruit, cured meats and of course wine, oh how the wine flows at The Gardens. It’s safe to say the crowd was in the palm of Cliff’s hand from the get-go but the legend never took it for granted and poured his heart and soul into every moment of the 75 minute set.

Bruce Hornsby – August 30th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 4 min read

A crowd peppered mainly with 30 something couples and high-spirited baby boomers settled in on the lawn of the Denver Botanic Gardens Thursday night by draping blankets and uncorking bottles of wine. The well-dressed group seemed eager to enjoy the smooth sounds of Nicki Bluhm and the freewheeling Bruce Hornsby. The heat of the day had subsided and a few gray clouds slowly rolled in at this urban, yet intimate, location. The gathering had energy and seemed ready to party, in that loafers and khaki shorts kind of way.

Al Green – July 23rd – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Monday at the Botanic Gardens, the wine flowed, cured meats and cheeses were consumed by the plateful, and though the threat of rain hung in the air (and even fell out of it from time to time), it didn’t dampen the spirits of the Gardens faithful who had come out in droves to catch the one and only Reverend Al Green and Denver’s own soul sister, Hazel Miller deliver Soul classics in the way that only they can.

Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen, & Buckwheat Zydeco – July 15th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 4 min read

It was a fickle night at The Gardens. The day started out hot and beautiful but soon after Buckwheat Zydeco began the heavens opened, and closed, and opened again. It turned out to be a great night of New Orleans music, but it took some perseverance, something that not everyone has.

Dr. John & Mavis Staples – June 14th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 5 min read

A nearly perfect day gave way to a beautiful night during a great evening of music from two 70+ year old Grammy winners at The Botanic Gardens. While both performers showed us why they had become the legends they are, when all was said and done the sheer power and inspirational nature of Mavis Staples’ set overpowered a more laid back and mellow performance from Dr. John.
