Front Side Five – March 17th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Platte river may not run green like the Chicago River, but Denverites are no less zealous in their celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. The celebration began on Saturday March 14th, and continued through March 17th in what seemed like a four day non-ending pub crawl. With a firm constitution, and cast iron liver, I made it through all this year’s celebratory activities which culminated in a great night of locals only music at the Bluebird Theater on Colfax.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Rowdy Shadehouse – Bluebird Theater – Friday, August 1st

Estimated read time 2 min read

Rowdy Shadehouse has been funking up stages in Colorado and beyond the past couple of years, but it looks like they are giving their A-stroke as of late, and sliding into the hearts of funk lovers everywhere. This bare chested, tight wearing, fun loving, party provoking and sex drive accelerating 6 to 9, not 69, piece band will blow your socks off but ask you to leave your boots on as they funk you to death.

Jason and The Punknecks – April 11th – The Lion’s Lair

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last week Jason and The Punknecks, the self proclaimed “Hillbilly Band of Sexy Punky Tonkers,” took the slightly elevated stage at The Lion’s Lair. The band has made a name for themselves with their DIY ethic and nearly seven years of non-stop touring. The L.A. via Nashville couple of Jason and Polly Punkneck have a sound that is reminiscent of early X. That said, their punk country sound is rawer and more dangerous than the songs of John Doe and Exene Cervenka.

Estimated read time 4 min read

Bob Log III took the stage at The Marquis last week in his trademark Cannonball Man suit, metallic flake helmet, and face-shield. The helmet was wired for sound with a handset from what could have been any payphone and what came next as a a highly entertaining form of lo-fi Delta Blues played with Punk Rock attitude,

Champagne Charlie Talk Nudity On-Stage and Cheap Beer

Estimated read time 6 min read

Champagne Charlie is a band that grew both musically and lyrically despite, or maybe due to, dimly lit rooms, and the smell of stale beer combined with sour bar towels. Manifestation artistique, originally a four member band, their numbers have grown to seven or more depending on the night. Like Chicago Cabaret, Champagne Charlie fully embraces a larger band ensemble, believing “the more the better.”

Cirque Voltaire Deux – August 26th – The Oriental Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Cirque Voltaire Deux featured two musical acts and a stage was filled with sideshow acts, burlesque dancers, mentalist magic, aerial performers, a bearded lady, and even an animal act with a trained monkey playing cymbals. It was a night of sensory overload which Brandan Styles and Ellie Rusinova, the artistic duo that form Mad Tatters, coordinated to promote intellectual exchanges, oppose intolerance, and just maybe have a little fun along the way.
