2014 was a year of transformation for Yonder Mountain String Band. We had a chance to chat with banjo player Dave Johnston who talked about Yonder’s star studded New Year’s run, their new album, and what the future holds in store for YMSB. Dave also spoke candidly about the challenges faced in the wake of Jeff Austin’s departure from the band as well as YMSB’s search for a new identity.
Hot Buttered Rum and Cornmeal kicked off their co-headlining tour at The Ogden Theatre in Denver last Saturday night. Band and fans alike were all smiles as Hot Buttered Rum got things started with an upbeat 90 minute set. Cornmeal followed with a set that flowed perfectly, and featured several songs that stretched beyond the ten minute mark, including a nearly twenty minute “Black Smoke Rising.” The evening was capped with a thirty minute “clusterpluck” featuring all members of both bands.
Saturday night, The Ogden will feature a stunning double bill of two of the best young bands on the Jamgrass scene these days. Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution while seven years of constant touring has transformed Hot Buttered Rum from an acoustic string band into a plugged-in, percussive powerhouse that wows critics and fans alike. It’s going to be a night that fans of both bands will not soon forget!
