Legendary guitarist Adrian Belew was kind enough to spend some time talking with us as he waited out a fire drill in his Denver hotel on the eve of the “Remain In Light” tour that launches at the Ogden Theater here in Denver on February 16th.
Red Rocks Amphitheater hosted the beloved Lotus this past Friday night. Wandering the lots of the famed venue, one was bound to find a mass amount of Bisco heads, several Phish heads and much chatter around… The Talking Heads. Perhaps a more diverse crowd than usual joined the loyal Lotus clan this time around to pay tribute to the great American rock band, The Talking Heads.
Four albums into one of music’s most compelling careers, St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, is not slowing down any time soon. The music on her most recent release, ‘St. Vincent’, is charming and alarming, gorgeous and morbid, comforting and uncanny and will be incredible to experience in the veritable Garden of Eden that is the Denver Botanic Gardens this Saturday.
An air of mystical excitement filled Red Rocks on Friday the 13th. The curious date was met with another peculiar happening: a full moon, a combo which won’t be seen again until 2049. All of this made for a fantastic yet somewhat eerie mood within the crowd. Put it together with the enchanting Electronic World Dance music of Thievery Corporation at the world famous venue Red Rocks and what do you get? “It’s going to be spiritual,” I heard one guy say. His prediction was spot-on.
2013 was an amazing year for music on the Front Range and for us here at Listen Up Denver! Our team of talented writers and photographers has been working diligently all year to be sure that Listen Up Denver! remains one of Colorado’s best music resources. Though we have all attended countless shows this year, we’ve tried to narrow it down to a few choice picks for our “Shows of the Year.” Some of the biggest bands in the world stopped in Colorado this year, but this list proves that we have some exceptional local talent well.
Despite the fact that David Bryne and Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) were forced to cut their set a bit short due to a lengthy rain delay before their concert last weekend at The Botanic Gardens at Chatfield, they put on a fantastic performance, and one that will people will be talking about until the next time Byrne comes to town. The duo treated us to about two thirds of their recent collaboration ‘Love This Giant’ along with a smattering of St Vincent originals and some real crowd pleasers in the form of four Talking Heads covers.
David Byrne and St. Vincent developed like many a New York City-bred friendship. Called “marvelous” by the New Yorker and “magical” by NPR, the duo’s album, Love This Giant, has earned rave reviews from TIME, New York Magazine, the New York Times, and SPIN. Here in Colorado you can catch the “magical urbanity” and “cacophony of the city” in the beautiful setting of the foothills of the Front Range, truly the best of both worlds.
George Porter Jr. was a pioneer of the Funk sound during his days with The Meters, and he has been laying down funky bass licks since the 60s. Recently, he and his band The Runnin’ Pardners have released a new album called Can’t Beat The Funk. Listen Up Denver! caught up with him as he was spending some time at home in New Orleans before heading out for Jam Cruise.
