Van Halen – July 20th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 7 min read

Rock legends Van Halen gave nostalgia seeking fans a thrill with a nearly sold-out performance at Red Rocks that served as a fitting metaphor for the band’s career. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” said an overserved fan as we headed out of the venue and it couldn’t have been more true. Despite having to deal with a pretty heavy pre-show dose of rain and an insanely drunk crowd, the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers delivered a hit filled, high energy show that left ears ringing for a few days after the fact.

With outrageous stage antics that include gaudy leotards stolen from Steven Tyler’s wardrobe, leaps and splits borrowed from David Lee Roth, and an ear-piercing falsetto copped from Freddie Mercury himself, England’s The Darkness have single-handedly resurrected the rather unfashionable sounds and attitudes of late-’70s hard rock for an unsuspecting generation.
