It’s been decades since the Southern California sun first breathed life into the Americana-laced rock of acts like The Byrds, The Eagles, Poco, and Jackson Brown in the late ’60s and ’70s. While there has been resurgence of that sound in recent years, one L.A. band has emerged head and shoulders above the rest to carry on the legacy that McGuinn, Henley, Frey, Brown and others helped to define. That band is Dawes.

Assembly of Dust has a sound that recalls the likes of The Band and Neil Young, but they have taken that early 70’s Americana sound and put their own contemporary spin on it. While they haven’t played Colorado in nearly three years, the band, fronted by former Strangefolk frontman Reid Genauer, should have no problem packing The Summit Music Hall when they come to town this weekend.
Strange Americans have created a smoldering sound that is a well thought out blend of Alt-Country, Indie Rock, and Americana, by cherry picking some of the best elements of acclaimed acts like Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket, and The Band, to influence their songwriting. Earlier this week they were kind enough to take some time to answer our 20 Questions as they prepped for a big show on Friday night at The Hi-Dive with a couple of our other favorite local acts, Mosey West and Grub Street Writer.
Mumford & Sons set up shop at Red Rocks for two nights last week and invited Dawes, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Slow Club to join them. While the headliner’s setlists for the two nights were nearly identical, by all accounts the band wow’d the capacity crowds each evening and even those who attend both shows were blown away. Clearly forshadowing the release of their highly anticipated upcoming record, Babel, the group highlighted seven songs from the album that will be released at the end of the month.
Last October, Gordy Quist and the rest of The Band of Heathens got cozy at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom for two nights and recorded a live two DVD and CD set called The Double Down – Live in Denver. Listen Up Denver! had the chance to catch up with Gordy Quist while he was at home in Austin recently, and he was nice enough to share some of his thoughts on the last time he was here in the Mile High City.
