Listen Up Denver’s Brian Turk sat down for a conversation with Megan Burtt shortly after she stepped off the stage at Dazzle last week. She had just performed an emotional piano concert that consisted almost entirely of songs inspired by the personal sketchbook entries of painter Laurie Maves and we are grateful to her for opening up and taking the time to talk.

There was a convergence of the arts last Wednesday night at the swanky Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge. Songstress Megan Burtt and painter Laurie Maves collaborated in an amazing display of emotion, passion and artistry. What started as a random idea to collaborate on a few songs turned into an intimate evening in one of the best jazz venues in the country. The Bad Plus is in their element in the live setting. Watching these three men work together on stage gives the listener an appreciation for their music that cannot be conveyed solely through a set of speakers. They are wizards of modern jazz and musical treasures who gave yet another outstanding performance last night at Dazzle Jazz in Denver.

Henry Butler – May 1st – Dazzle Jazz

Though he no longer spends a majority of his time in Denver as he did in the months and years after Katrina, Butler did have good things to say about our city and even mentioned that he still owns a house here. Hopefully this means that we’ll see him on the intimate stage of Dazzle again in the near future as I think it’s been 3 years or so since he was there last time. As far as I’m concerned, he’s welcome any time!
