Telluride Bluegrass Festival – June 21, 22, 23, 24 – Telluride Town Park

The Summer Solstice has always been a significant time of year for celebration in many cultures and that holds true for Bluegrass “festivarians” as well. Each year, more than 10,000 music lovers, many of them repeat offenders, congregate in one of the most picturesque box canyons known to man, Telluride Colorado. This unique town has been host to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival since its inception in 1974. That’s 45 years of perfecting a balance of bluegrass, hippies, outdoor enthusiasts.

Old Crow Medicine Show & Brandi Carlile – August 14th – Red Rocks Amphitheater

A beautiful Sunday night show at Red Rocks boasts incredible vocals from Washington native, Brandi Carlile, followed by some Tennessee bluegrass from Old Crow Medicine Show. Changes to sound and stage set up brought a new energy to an old show and allowed for the band to show off their new country sound.

If you love Rocky Mountain Bluegrass as much as we do, you’ve surely happened upon the skilled sounds of Trout Steak Revival. The quintet is making waves in our little pond with their elaborate harmonies, which are backed by strong instrumentation and impressive song writing abilities. While the group hails out of Denver, their music was inspired by what lies just beyond our city in the “misty high country” where they say the music was born. They started as an informal Bluegrass Jam group and have made huge leaps in years since.

Two weekends ago, Wakarusa, and it’s army of party people and music lovers, lit up Mulberry Mountain in Arkansas. With acts ranging from The Weir, Robinson, Greene Acoustic Trio, to the electro madness of Pretty Lights, the festival offered something for everyone. The Listen Up Denver! crew had such a blast that we are going to split our report into two articles. The first focuses on days one and two of the festival, and there is more to come. 20 Questions With MTHDS

Denver’s MTHDS are reviving their Beastie Boys tribute show this week in honor of Adam “MCA” Yauch who passed away in early May and they took some time to answer our “20 Questions” as they prepped for the show. One read through this exchange and you’ll get a feel for what a witty, sarcastic bunch of guys that make up this group. From comparing themselves to The Partridge Family to claiming that John Denver is one of the best local bands on the scene right now, it’s clear that one of the only these guys take seriously is their music.
