Burning Man – August 27 – September 3 – Black Rock City, NV
Burning Man is much more than just a temporary community. It’s a city in the desert dedicated to radical self reliance, radical self-expression, and art. Innovative sculpture, art installations, performance art, theme camps, art cars, and costumes all represent forms of artistic expression on the playa. Elements of the abstract and surreal are everywhere as long horned steers and cans of Spam rise from the desert floor that surround the Man and the Temple.
See-I – March 15th – Cervantes’ Ballroom
Proud of their musical heritage in their neighborhood of Five Points, Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom and The Other Side book music for Denver’s more adventurous listeners. Looking for the next big thing, they often book artists that are difficult to categorize. Last Thursday’s line-up is a prime example, as a one-man band Zach Deputy, playing his self-proclaimed “Island-Infused Drum n’ Bass Gospel Ninja Soul” opened up for See-I, an equally diverse DC super group that features members of Thievery Corporation.
Empresarios – Bestia Remixed EP
With the release of Empresarios Bestia Remixed EP, Fort Knox Recordings lives up to their mission statement to explore the funkier side of global music. It is damned fortuitous that this new Empresarios EP dropped on Valentine’s Day, because we at the Listen Up Denver! office love this collection of red-hot remixes.
See-I Talks Crooning And Dinner With Herb
As the Saturday evening party crowd at Cervantes’ paid their bar tabs and filed out onto Welton Street to find their way home or wherever it is people go at 2 AM, Rootz, Zeebo, Rob, and Frank of See-I were kind enough to sit down and to talk to us at Listen Up Denver! about crooning, Dinner With Herb, and their new Remix Compilation that drops next Tuesday.
See-I – November 11th – Cervantes’ Ballroom
Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom lies in the middle of Denver’s Five Point Neighborhood, where the thriving music scene in this town was born. Cervantes’ has a long history and on Friday night the room that once hosted the great James Brown was again filled with strains of Funk and Soul. The only difference was that this time those classic sounds were blended with Reggae and Dancehall as See-I brought their signature sound back to Denver.
Collegiate Peaks Music Festival – July 28-30 – Buena Vista, CO
Collegiate Peaks Music Festival, now in its 6th year, may just be the best little known music festival of 2011. This year a diverse line up of 14 bands took to the stage situated next to the Arkansas River and in the shadow of the Collegiate Peaks from July 28th – July 30th. Staying with tradition, CPMF remains a celebration of Colorado by featuring some of the best bands from around the state. Additionally, the festival recruits an eclectic selection of touring bands from all over the US.
Orgone – July 23rd – Cervantes Other Side
It was a sweaty dance party at Cervantes Other Side on Saturday night. From the start of the night the Funk was flowing freely and as the night moved on the bodies crammed together in the packed club pushed the temperature higher with every passing hour. Despite the heat, the vibe was intensely positive; as if we were all witnessing something truly special.
