Imagine a tiny wayside town off the beaten path of another place off another beaten path. This is Rancho Del Rio, site of the annual Campout for the Cause festival. Located four miles from State Bridge in Bond Co and Highway 131, the use of the word “town” for Rancho Del Rio is extravagant. Simply “Rancho,” as the locals call it, is no more than a smattering of small cabins and a local BBQ stand.

From the commercially huge Pepsi Center, to the historically landmarked Red Rocks, to the wooden lodge that makes up Rollinsville’s Stage Stop, us Colorado folk consistently do music right, and Elephant Revival is one beaming example of that fact. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen Elephant Revival play, each time is pure “magic” and Wednesday night’s “secret show” proved that fact yet again as the band made the best of an opportunity to break in a new band member surrounded by the undying support of fans and loved ones.
The one summarizing thought about this year’s YarmonyGrass: not enough! Just two days of hardly strictly bluegrass on the Colorado River was not enough. The weekend boasted blue skies, warm temperatures and so many friendly faces gathered at Rancho Del Rio for the best of what Colorado has to offer of Bluegrass and string music. Mountain air, clear skies and incredible once in a lifetime collaborations made YarmonyGrass 2014 one of the most beautiful and unforgettable summer festivals to date.
This weekend brings the annual YarmonyGrass back to Rancho Del Rio, high up in the Rockies–because there’s no better place in the world for a Bluegrass festival. A favorite on the Colorado summer music schedule, YarmonyGrass provides a variety of native and nationally renowned names in the Bluegrass and string band communities. This year’s lineup boasts a number of impressive acts so we’ve put together our “Top Five” acts that cannot be missed.
Sometimes a band’s name seems to mean nothing about the band, and sometimes it clearly means everything. Well, for Gipsy Moon, it’s all in the name. Hailing from the majestic, mountain town of Nederland, this young band captures the soul of their surroundings in the music they create. We had the pleasure of chatting with Gipsy Moon’s David Matters (banjo, guitar, vocals), who gave us some insight on the name and the spirit of this band who is “On the Road to ARISE.”
Rancho Del Rio was home to Campout for the Cause again this year. While over the years it had traveled downstream to the State Bridge venue, this year, founder and promoter, Scott Stoughton decided to return the festival to its roots by placing it back at the pseudo-shanty town/river paradise that sits against the back drop to the usually peaceful Colorado River. It didn’t turn out to be so peaceful this weekend, but we’ll get to that later.
