Viagra Boys & Shame – October 8th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

“He didn’t even puke!” That is not the response one expects to hear when chatting with a girl near the bar after a set. “Insane, right?” I was talking about a Viagra Boys set so wild it prompted a kid to do a backflip off the balcony into the crowd. “Amazing,” she replied, “he didn’t even puke!” Obviously, I wasn’t up on the latest Viagra Boys scoop, but evidently, the lead singer, Seb, is usually accompanied by a bucket on stage, just in case he needs to vomit between songs.

The Tallest Man on Earth – March 22nd – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Last Tuesday marked the Denver return of The Tallest Man on Earth. I’ve been waiting to see Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth) for quite a while now. I had seen him in 2013, missed him in 2015, and I was eagerly anticipating his September 2019 show at The Mission Ballroom but that got cancelled (before we got used to EVERYTHING be cancelled ALL THE TIME), so when this show was announced, I knew I couldn’t miss it.

Typhoon – January 12th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

Last Friday night, Portland’s Typhoon returned to Colorado for the first time since 2014. The packed concert at the Gothic Theatre coincided with the release date of their newest album, Offerings; their first in four years. The band delivered a very satisfying set that had the floor of the theater mirroring the energy on stage. Each song was an exercise in dynamics and percussive anomalies, with gentle verses culminating in chaotic climaxes, made all the more turbulent by the seven piece band.

Craig Finn – March 7th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

Craig Finn took the stage on Tuesday night before a largely receptive and rapidly filling room at The Gothic. Though most of the fans were not out expressly to see Finn, there were lots of hoots and fists in the air as he kicked off the set with “Western Pier” from his 2012 debut solo LP ‘Clear Heart Full Eyes.’ It was short but sweet set that highlighted material from each of his records, along with his upcoming LP, and Finn delivered a memorable performance for those in the know, and those just getting turned on.

Moon Taxi – November 5th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

November is one of the best months for live music in Denver and this past Thursday night was a perfect example as Nashville-based indie/jam rockers, Moon Taxi, returned to the Mile High City. The quintet has seen a steady rise in their Denver fan base since first playing Moe’s Original BBQ almost 10 years ago. After that show lead singer Trevor Terndrup saw the Gothic marquee and said “One day, we will get to play in a place like that.” Thursday night was the realization of that dream.

The Sword & All Them Witches – November 2nd – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

For three hours on Monday night, The Gothic was beamed back to the heavy 70’s, prompting visions of what it might have been like to see Mountain open for Deep Purple in 1972. On the road in support of new records, The Sword and All Them Witches rolled into Englewood and laid down one of the best nights of retro Rock and Roll this town has seen in a very long time.

Many types of Punk Rock were represented Saturday night at the Gothic Theatre, starting with Melodic Rock/Punk Rock, followed by Pop Punk, then Melodic Hardcore, and ending with Skate Punk. The crowd was as varied as the lineup, there were lots of middle-agers, bros, cool kids, and even a few Screamo fans that showed up for the sold-out event. Many fans showed support for one of the biggest names in Punk Rock by wearing Pennywise t-shirts.

2014 went out with a fight, giving her last days hell in the form of wicked cold temperatures but Lucero warmed up the crowd at The Gothic last Monday night. It was was the 1st night of a three night New Year’s run, one can only imagine what the grand finally was like on New Year’s Eve!

Future Islands – August 27th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

At this point, Future Islands’ reputation as raw, intense, and emotional performers precedes them. Last Wednesday Future Islands cast off all pretenses and played for a sold-out Gothic Theatre. With a stark stage set and hardly any production to speak of, the group delved into their music, nothing more and nothing less. The outcome was spectacular. Led by their ever-emotional front man Samuel Herring, the group delivered a consummate performance; we will be seeing much more of Future Islands in the horizon.

20 Questions with Synthetic Elements

Estimated read time 5 min read

Since 2001 local Punk-based band Synthetic Elements have been making the kind of music that makes a once-punker nostalgic for days past. Their high-energy tempo, entertaining lyrics and catchy vocal harmonies are as impressive as their technical prowess, on their four studio albums and in live performances alike. They met in high school and grew up as a band in Denver, and have worked just about every stage in town. We sat down with drummer Brett Carson to hear his answers to our 20 Questions.
