  • Nothing goes better with good southern barbeque than good southern music. Well, maybe whiskey too. But whiskey make you do funny thangs and in showman Robby Peoples case funny, awesome thangs. On a cold, drizzly night in Colorado, in a dimly lit, hot and sweaty dancehall at the back of a barbeque joint, Peoples and his band brought a little Mississippi heat and Listen Up Denver! was there to soak it up.

  • Grateful Dead founders Bob Weir and Phil Lesh laid siege on the Colorado Front Range this past weekend with their band, Furthur. The 4-night run of shows started with a single, intimate performance at The Ogden Theatre in the heart of Denver, an extremely difficult ticket to obtain, and then moved up to the much larger 1st Bank Center in Broomfield where no one would be shut out. By all reports the run featured some great music.

  • It was a brisk Friday night on East Colfax. The streets felt electric and alive and the energy and animation outside The Ogden was no doubt an extension of what was about to take place inside as Medeski, Scofield, Martin, and Wood prepared to take the stage. MMW alone are a band that steps out into the whizzing traffic of the music world, refusing to yield to the traffic lights of convention. But add experimental Jazz guitarist John Scofield to the mix and you have a rebellion on your hands.

  • Bob Weir stops into The Paramount this week on his solo acoustic tour and by all accounts this is a must see show as he transforms from the front man to the man up front, going it alone like the archetypal cowboy. It's Weir boiled down: passionate singing, masterful songwriting, unique guitar work, and surely some hilarious one-liners delivered in his classic deadpan style. So ante up to play another hand with Bobby but don’t be surprised when he lays down a Royal Flush, Aces back-to-back.

  • Moments before jam super-group Dirty Dawgs took the stage on Friday night at the new Quixotes', we found out from a friend that Ray White (of Frank Zappa fame) was in the house and would be sitting in throughout the night. Ray White sitting in with a super-group composed of Michael Kang, Steve Molitz, Eric Gould, and Brandon Draper in the main room, and The Grant Farm in the bar? It had all the hallmarks of a crazy night and lived up to the billing!

  • The Bluebird was an interesting mix of aging hippies, buttoned up 50 somethings out for a rare show, and Jamband kids checking one off the "Legends List" last Thursday night. Little Feat is one of the true legendary jambands of all time and they proved it yet again as they delivered a high energy two hour set that wove in and out of classic originals, fresh new tunes, and even a choice cover. They may not be playing the big sheds anymore, but they are clearly loving what they do and they are still doing it damn well.

  • Last Monday at the Botanic Gardens, the wine flowed, cured meats and cheeses were consumed by the plateful, and though the threat of rain hung in the air (and even fell out of it from time to time), it didn't dampen the spirits of the Gardens faithful who had come out in droves to catch the one and only Reverend Al Green and Denver's own soul sister, Hazel Miller deliver Soul classics in the way that only they can.
