Elephant Revival – May 20th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Elephant Revival said goodbye to fans with one last show at Red Rocks this past Sunday. A cold rain dumped on the bundled up audience, but they stuck it out and celebrated a night full of Elephant Revival’s earthy, mountain music, full of special guests and old songs.

Sure this festival is about music, but more than that it’s about the community that surrounds the music as performers stand in line alongside fans for a bowl of Sister’s Dumplings, hard fought for tarp dash numbers are graciously given away to unsuspecting families, and strangers look out for each other on the slippery river rocks. For three days each August the real world melts away as we join the rest of the Folks on Planet Bluegrass.

Imagine a tiny wayside town off the beaten path of another place off another beaten path. This is Rancho Del Rio, site of the annual Campout for the Cause festival. Located four miles from State Bridge in Bond Co and Highway 131, the use of the word “town” for Rancho Del Rio is extravagant. Simply “Rancho,” as the locals call it, is no more than a smattering of small cabins and a local BBQ stand.

Thursday night an amazing set traversed the vast expanses that Gregory Alan Isakov so deftly paints. He stood still as lyric and music painted scenes around him in the minds of the audience, drawing on the emotions the mind tends to attach to those spaces. The set was heavily centered on 2013’s ‘The Weatherman,’ though plenty of favorites from previous albums made appearances as well.
