Sam Beam, better known by the moniker Iron & Wine, returned to Colorado Friday night, in support of his latest album Love Letter for Fire, a collection of duets with singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop. Flannel clad Gen X’ers filled rows of chairs well before the start of the show in anticipation of the intimate evening. The stage was barricaded with a large collection of table lamps of various shapes and styles, creating a house show vibe in the thousand person venue.

The weather in Morrison on Monday night was just about perfect, there was a slight breeze and just the hint of a chill in the evening air as a varied crowd poured into Red Rocks for a unique double-bill of two genre defying artists who each chose to tackle The Rocks on their own without the help of their backing bands. It was an amazing night night filled moments turned to memories that are sure to last a lifetime.

Damien Rice – April 17th – Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

Damien Rice’s rise to popularity came some twelve years ago with the success of his 2002 album, O. In the long time since his last visit, Rice’s life has taken some major turns and so have the lives of his fans, who, he joked, had probably had babies since the last time he played Boulder. A sold-out crowd filled Boulder Theater last Friday night for Damien Rice’s long awaited return. Though Rice played solo, he transcended any coffee shop stereotypes that critics have thrown his way and played a long, powerful set.

The Head And The Heart – August 14th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

An extremely long line of fans trailed down the road behind the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheatre last Thursday night for a first-rate show that nearly didn’t come to fruition after a severed power line cut power to the historic venue. Though the show was pushed back an hour, fans were in high spirits and the show that followed was more than worth the wait.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Iron & Wine – Paramount Theatre – Thursday, November 7th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam is truly a poet and a one man band. For his new album, ‘Ghost on Ghost,’ Beam sought to move from what he called the “anxious tension” of his two previous records. “This record felt like a reward to myself after the way I went about making the last few,” he says. Don’t miss him with a twelve piece band on Thursday night at The Paramount!

Rocky Mountain Folks Festival – August 17th, 18th, 19th – Planet Bluegrass Ranch, Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 13 min read

I think it’s become a goal of the team up at Planet Bluegrass to out-do themselves from year to year with the line-up of the Folks Festival. While last year featured headliners Jackson Browne, The Weir Robinson Greene Trio, and Brandi Carlile, this year brought Iron & Wine, Amos Lee, and Lyle Lovett to the intimate stage by the river in Lyons and each one mesmerized and surprised as they entertained the sold-out crowd.

Bon Iver – May 31st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

Last Thursday night Bon Iver took over Red Rocks and Justin Vernon proved that there may be no better venue on the planet for him to work his magic as he whisked us all away to that eerily special place that only his voice can conjure up. The crowd swooned as the unshaven Vernon’s voice reverberated off the rocks that towered on each side of the amphitheater and his nine piece band fleshed out the sound with guitars, strings, horns, keys, and booming drums. It was truly a magical night on the rocks.
