Chris Stapleton – May 24th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Although he’s been receiving industry recognition for almost a decade (Stapleton was first nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009), , the humble family man who has quickly rose to the top of the charts in country music, is loved not only by country music fans but by fans of all genres. His deep voice is full of soul and has roots that are reminiscent of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and the current Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band. Stapleton quickly sold-out two nights at Red Rocks this summer, which was certain to be recognized nationwide.

Infamous Stringdusters – December 12th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 4 min read

Dobro penetrated brick walls as I waited in line for the box office on Saturday. Inside the Fillmore Auditorium, soundcheck was unfolding for a huge night of music rooted in tradition, but tied to the heartbeat of the present. Inside, three bands, all with ties to Colorado, waited to play for the massive auditorium. There were flannels, puffy coats, vests, dresses, boots and of course, beards all there to witness a great evening of Americana that wrapped with all of the musicians onstage singing “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

Neil Young – July 8th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

A light rain trickled down from a sagging, slate colored grey sky. A mostly older crowd—with some youngsters peppered in—ambled up the storied steps of Red Rocks. In between the rocks a colorful crowd was gathering, decked out multi-colored ponchos and rain jackets. While the air was a bit chilly for early July, the air smelled like sweet rain and Colorado’s finest as Neil Young delivered a monster set chock full of classics like “Old Man,” “Walk On,” “Cowgirl In The Sand,” “Unknown Legend,” and many many more.

U2 – June 7th – Pepsi Center

Estimated read time 6 min read

Arena concerts may not be the best way to experience live music, but for some bands, there just isn’t any other way to see them. U2 is one of those bands. Multiple night runs in arenas and stadiums are they way U2 has toured for years now and, given their massively creative ideas for staging these kinds of monster shows, it wasn’t so bad going into an arena to see them do their thing. Though, in the end, the performance was a bit uneven, the band delivered some monster cuts and memorable staging that made the trip into The Can worthwhile.

One of the coolest albums of 2015 so far also has one of the coolest stories behind it. Before Roebuck “Pops” Staples, the patriarch of the iconic Staples Singers, passed away in 2000, he gave his daughter Mavis a record which contained “Pops” singing and playing guitar. While in his final days, “Pops” told Mavis to look after the record he recorded, telling Mavis, “Please don’t lose this.”

20 Questions with Trout Steak Revival

Estimated read time 6 min read

If you love Rocky Mountain Bluegrass as much as we do, you’ve surely happened upon the skilled sounds of Trout Steak Revival. The quintet is making waves in our little pond with their elaborate harmonies, which are backed by strong instrumentation and impressive song writing abilities. While the group hails out of Denver, their music was inspired by what lies just beyond our city in the “misty high country” where they say the music was born. They started as an informal Bluegrass Jam group and have made huge leaps in years since.

Joan Baez – July 10th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 3 min read

A long line of silver haired patrons holding mini lawn chairs filed all the way around the corner and down Ninth Avenue last Thursday for folk legend Joan Baez. The singer-songwriter was in good spirits, full of energy and easily appearing ten years younger than seventy-three. She played an hour and half set consisting primarily of covers of her contemporaries leaving fans satisfied but slightly disappointed by the very tiny amount of her own work that she played.

Local Natives – April 26th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

A polite crowd of texting teens and twenty-somethings gathered at the Ogden Theatre on Friday to experience the sound of Local Natives, a sound that was relaxed but exuberant, with a driving but hazy tenor to it. The group delivered a noteworthy performance as fans used their various social outlets to share their excitement for the event. It was amusing on several levels, to say the least.
