Lake Street Dive – September 6th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

Like all things in this human condition, art also follows the circle of life. Having just seen the memorials in honor of Aretha Franklin’s passing and feeling like there is a vacuum now in the world of great vocalist…suddenly the circle closed and the gap was filled by Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive.

Rocky Mountain Folks Fest – August 18, 19, 20 – Planet Bluegrass, Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 8 min read

Sure this festival is about music, but more than that it’s about the community that surrounds the music as performers stand in line alongside fans for a bowl of Sister’s Dumplings, hard fought for tarp dash numbers are graciously given away to unsuspecting families, and strangers look out for each other on the slippery river rocks. For three days each August the real world melts away as we join the rest of the Folks on Planet Bluegrass.

Elephant Revival – December 4th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Ogden was filled with flannel and beards for the opening night of a two night homecoming for Colorado’s own Elephant Revival — quite the feat for a band from the tiny mountain town of Nederland. The group expanded their whimsical folk music into extended bluegrass jams and topped everything off with aerialists twirling from ribbons strung above the packed crowd.

20 Questions with The Crooked Streets

Estimated read time 9 min read

From Open Mic night to editor’s pick, Mathias Olson has come along way to find himself on the beat of The Crooked Streets. The band formed in 2011 when the singer/songwriter decided to take his solo project to the next level. Three years and several craigslist ads later, he now fronts the five-piece Denver Indie Folk band that many locals have come to love. Their crooning gypsy sound is gritty but has a certain charm–the shabby chic sort of feel that is so common of the great modern Indie Folk groups of our time.

Josh Ritter & The Milk Carton Kids – August 12th – Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 4 min read

In a state where we are fortunate enough to have some of the most beautiful venues to hear music in, The Denver Botanic Gardens is right up there on the list alongside Red Rocks, The Mish, and Planet Bluegrass. It’s picturesque gardens and lush, “in the round” grass amphitheater, is an almost ideal place to enjoy a summertime concert and last week a modest crowd gathered with their picnics for a folky evening with The Milk Carton Kids and Josh Ritter.

The Milk Carton Kids – May 2nd – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Bluebird Theater was a full house this past Thursday night for California Folk duo The Milk Carton Kids’ sold out show. The Milk Carton kids hit Denver in the middle of their North American tour in support of The Ash & Clay, which was released back in March. The Bluebird was filled from front to back with folding chairs and winter coats saving seats, both quite the unusual sight. In the end the hilarious and heartfelt set made for a memorable experience and a truly great show.
