To call it “Hot in Herre” was an understatement last Thursday night when Nelly hit the stage at Cervantes’ for a sold-out show. Labeled “An Intimate Performance by Nelly,” the pre-show conversation had people wondering what type of performance this would be. Would Nelly be pumping out slow jams, or did “intimate” simply mean we’d be up close and personal with one of our favorite rappers from the early ‘00s? Luckily it was the latter, and nearly every song that shot Nelly to the top of the charts over ten years ago was performed.

The party was on at Cervantes’ last Friday night as lovers and those looking for love packed the Ballroom for the second installment of J2G Live’s “Love Shack” event. To celebrate the holiday you love to hate, The Love Shack puts a cheerful spin on things regardless of your status. From the Delorean parked out front to Marc Brownstein performing the narration on “Thriller” as the show wound to a close, last Friday night’s long-anticipated Dance Party Time Machine was a major, bad-to-the-bone success. A vast majority of Denver’s local Jam, Rock, and Funk music scenes were represented, with musicians taking turns on-stage throughout the duration of the Dance Party’s 4-hour throw-down. Denverites should feel lucky to have such incredible performers, artists, and musicians living in our midst.

Church was in session Sunday night as Maceo Parker and his band of Funk-fueled musicians took Denverites on a journey to the early days of Funk. The huge room at Cervantes’ was pretty empty early on, leaving those who arrived in time for Analog Son wondering why people were opting to stay in rather than see a legend like Maceo take the stage in such a small club. Halfway through the night, fans of the Funk had come out of the woodwork and the saxophone was preaching to the congregation.
