Space Orphan (Album Release Party) – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom – Friday, September 30th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Progressive old school. What does that even mean? For this group, it means providing a soulful, funky sound that is heavily based on groove, just as bands like The Meters and James Brown did in years past. But it also means taking those classic, danceable elements, and adding a few new tricks. Space Orphan will hit you in your soul and keep you dancing at the same time.

String Cheese Incident – December 29th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 4 min read

While it wasn’t packed by any means, the 1stBank Center was amped up for the first of three String Cheese Incident shows last Monday night despite the bitter cold, snowy darkness that had enveloped Denver shortly after Christmas. All the regulars were riding the rail, there were stilt walkers and hula-hoopers, costumes, and of course glitter…lots of glitter. To say the boys came out of the gate hot would be an understatement but, unfortunately, despite some great playing, the second set was a bit of a let-down.

The Motet – April 20th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 6 min read

Every year in Colorado, April 20 really does feel like a holiday. But this year, with the passage of Amendment 64 last fall, Coloradoans were craving that Rocky Mountain High more than ever. Colfax was packed early in the day, and it definitely seemed like something strange was in the air. For the funky dance band known for its sold-out, psychedelic Halloween shows, the weirdness in the air last Saturday could have resembled one of those late October shows The Motet has been putting on for about a decade.

String Cheese Incident – December 29th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 6 min read

With String Cheese Incident back in Colorado for their first New Year’s run since 1996, the air was buzzing on Saturday night. There was talk of special guests, outrageous production, and of course the constant chatter of how the boys would sound. Were they going to be on, or was it going to be a bit rough finding the groove considering they’ve had the better part of six months off from playing live? By the end of night one it was clear they had been gearing up for this run for a long time.

Soulive & Kyle Hollingsworth Band – December 7th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

Estimated read time 4 min read

Concert-goers escaped a chilly Friday evening as Cervantes’ played host to Kyle Hollingsworth Band and Soulive. With local favorites Good Gravy rocking The Other Side, an eccentric and young mix of Jazz veterans and Jamband stalwarts packed in for a night of smooth vibes and all around rambunctious behavior. Though Hollingsworth kicked things off with an uninspired set, Soulive moved us with a soulful and Jazzy performance.

Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood – December 7th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 10 min read

It was a brisk Friday night on East Colfax. The streets felt electric and alive and the energy and animation outside The Ogden was no doubt an extension of what was about to take place inside as Medeski, Scofield, Martin, and Wood prepared to take the stage. MMW alone are a band that steps out into the whizzing traffic of the music world, refusing to yield to the traffic lights of convention. But add experimental Jazz guitarist John Scofield to the mix and you have a rebellion on your hands.
