King Khan & the Shrines – October 19, 2013 – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 4 min read

Sauntering out as the Shrines started playing, King Khan arrived ready to preach last weekend at The Larimer. Wearing a gold blazer, black shirt and pants, and his trademark animal tooth necklace and pseudo-jerry curl, King Khan wears his intensity, literally. This rotund, Canadian-Indian phenomenon created an evangelical, fantastical, and even dreamlike scene as he casually drop phrases like “slap your asses together” in the same tone a person might say “double espresso to go.”

PICK OF THE WEEK: Joe Pug – Larimer Lounge – Friday October 25th

Estimated read time 2 min read

It’s been more than 5 years since Joe Pug quit his day job as a carpenter, but his remarkable rise in the music world has been driven by the same hard-worn work ethic. His path has been an unusual one, which has often challenged the traditional rulebook of the music industry, but it has always been characterized by one prevailing idea: Find a way. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this amazing grass roots movement this Friday at the Larimer Lounge!

Daughter – May 13th – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 4 min read

Larimer Lounge was swarming with people for Daughter’s sold-out Monday night show last week. A younger crowd sporting flannels and peasant dresses, many with “X’s” marked on their hands, filled in around the small stage creating an exciting and intimate ambiance. Elana Tonra’s voice was just as hauntingly beautiful as it is on the record. What you hear is what you get, only with much more emotion. Overall, Daughter’s performance was poignant, evocative, and simply beautiful.

PICK OF THE WEEK: JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – Larimer Lounge – Friday March 22nd

Estimated read time 2 min read

What does post-punk soul look like? Six and a half feet of raw emotion and sweat, with one leather boot planted in gutsy R&B, the other in taut minimalist grind. Snarling at the crowd beneath an afro pompadour, while indulging in a sly wink, singing to you directly, and here to make you dance. What does post-punk soul look like? It looks like JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound.

Fox Street Allstars (CD Release Party) – March 2nd – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 6 min read

The Larimer Lounge is a dive bar, pure and simple; it’s a little out of the way, wires hang from the low ceiling, and the walls are plastered with simple posters for upcoming shows, but last Saturday it was transformed into a Southern Juke Joint when Fox Street Allstars threw the album release party for their sophomore album Tough Talk. The sounds of R&B, Funk, and gritty, Whiskey soaked Rock-n-Roll spilled out on the street all night as the temperature inside climbed and bodies rubbed together on the dancefloor.

XXYYXX – February 27th – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 4 min read

The immediate intrigue for many fans of Orlando based producer Marcel Everett, is his age. At 17, his bedroom-studio musical creations hold weight and soul beyond expectation for someone who can’t yet vote. In a dimly lit setting like the Larimer Lounge, there’s no telling the age of a performer. With his sideburns, mini-fro and button down dress shirt, XXYYXX could have been a seasoned touring pro at first glance but from the moment his set began, a siren of inexperience was in the air.

Estimated read time 4 min read

A blizzard hangover didn’t stop a group of flannel-wearing fans of Alt-Country Rock band Drive-By Truckers from making their way to the Larimer Lounge last Sunday afternoon. Following his Saturday night solo show on the same stage, tickets for DBT’s lead guitarist Mike Cooley’s BBQ show were in high demand. It was Sunday Funday at its best – BBQ, gritty Country Rock music, and no-holds-barred stories from the one and only Mike Cooley of Drive-By Truckers.

Electric Six – February 19th – The Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 3 min read

Chock-full and literally stuck to the goo lined floors, a flannel and leather wearing group of fans with trucker hats and lots and lots of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans filled the Larimer Lounge last Tuesday as Electric Six took to the stage like Rock and Roll veterans. Front man, Dick Valentine delivered a tongue in cheek, saucy performance to the cult-like following as his band cranked out dialed in guitar riffs, thundering drums and Electronic fills that gave the band’s New Wave, Hard Rock sound a little contemporary pop.

20 Questions With Strange Americans

Estimated read time 7 min read

Strange Americans have created a smoldering sound that is a well thought out blend of Alt-Country, Indie Rock, and Americana, by cherry picking some of the best elements of acclaimed acts like Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket, and The Band, to influence their songwriting. Earlier this week they were kind enough to take some time to answer our 20 Questions as they prepped for a big show on Friday night at The Hi-Dive with a couple of our other favorite local acts, Mosey West and Grub Street Writer.
