Maceo Parker – October 19th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

Estimated read time 3 min read

Church was in session Sunday night as Maceo Parker and his band of Funk-fueled musicians took Denverites on a journey to the early days of Funk. The huge room at Cervantes’ was pretty empty early on, leaving those who arrived in time for Analog Son wondering why people were opting to stay in rather than see a legend like Maceo take the stage in such a small club. Halfway through the night, fans of the Funk had come out of the woodwork and the saxophone was preaching to the congregation.

The Birth Of The Church Of Funkentology

Estimated read time 6 min read

The Church of Funkentology is a religion by definition but a social organization by design. Our mission is to promote, protect, preserve and spread The Funk. We are in our formative stages, but our long term goal is for The Church of Funkentology to be the definitive resource and temple for The Funk. Listening to Funk music, or any music for that matter, is our act of devotion. We worship in front of stages and speakers. There is no “god,” but a central spiritual power we turn to, and that is The Funk. The Funk is a spirit, an essence and a fiery force.

After a blistering set from Colorado-by-way-of-Iowa local boys, Euforquestra, Parker took to the stage in dark sunglasses and grinned from ear to ear as he demonstrated his musical aptitude on sax, vocals, and even jazz flute. Maceo and his band moved the room in and out of Funk, Smooth Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Soul until the clock struck two.
