Maceo Parker – October 19th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom
Church was in session Sunday night as Maceo Parker and his band of Funk-fueled musicians took Denverites on a journey to the early days of Funk. The huge room at Cervantes’ was pretty empty early on, leaving those who arrived in time for Analog Son wondering why people were opting to stay in rather than see a legend like Maceo take the stage in such a small club. Halfway through the night, fans of the Funk had come out of the woodwork and the saxophone was preaching to the congregation.
The Birth Of The Church Of Funkentology
The Church of Funkentology is a religion by definition but a social organization by design. Our mission is to promote, protect, preserve and spread The Funk. We are in our formative stages, but our long term goal is for The Church of Funkentology to be the definitive resource and temple for The Funk. Listening to Funk music, or any music for that matter, is our act of devotion. We worship in front of stages and speakers. There is no “god,” but a central spiritual power we turn to, and that is The Funk. The Funk is a spirit, an essence and a fiery force.
Maceo Parker – February 22nd – Cervantes’ Ballroom
Last Friday Maceo Parker schooled a young crowd at Cervantes’ as he funked his way through a 50 year career that has featured stints with everyone from James Brown to Prince. After a blistering set from Colorado-by-way-of-Iowa local boys, Euforquestra, Parker took to the stage in dark sunglasses and grinned from ear to ear as he demonstrated his musical aptitude on sax, vocals, and even jazz flute. Maceo and his band moved the room in and out of Funk, Smooth Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Soul until the clock struck two.

Maceo Parker, his name is synonymous with funky music, his pedigree is impeccable, and his band is the tightest little Funk orchestra on earth. Everyone knows by now that Parker has played with each and every leader of funk. He started with James Brown, jumped aboard the Mothership with George Clinton, and stretched out in Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread.

This new super-group marries catchy hooks and Jazz sensibilities with the best of Jamband Soul, Pop, Reggae and Funk – and delivers a great show. Assembled around the captivating vocals & song-writing of Irish singer Aoife Hearty, Rodina also features New Mastersounds keyboards man Joe Tatton, Joshua Fairman of Kinetix is featured on Bass and Fox Street All Stars Eric Low and James Dumm weigh in on Drums and Guitar respectively.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Soulive’s “Snowlive” – February 17th-19th – The Fox Theatre
Soulive will be hosting their own mini-festival, dubbed Snowlive, this weekend at The Fox Theatre. The first two nights will feature special guests JJ Grey and Jennifer Hartswick, while the third night will be an evening of “Rubber Soulive” named after the band’s album of the same name paying tribute to The Beatles.
