With a rallying cry of “JOY NOW!” MarchFourth (M4 for short) throws itself and the audience into a swirling volcano of high-energy music and spectacle. What began as a Fat Tuesday party on March 4, 2003 in Portland, Oregon has become one of the nation’s best live touring acts. Halloween weekend in Denver is a big deal. Every major venue is packed with costumed music lovers and this year the hallowed theme of the revelers All Saints’ Day preparation was the sanctity of Funk. The Motet packed The Ogden for two nights recreating the sounds of Parliament Funkadelic, March Fourth Marching Band brought their fun and Funk filled vibe to The Gothic, and at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom, Rebirth Brass Band marched the saints in with New Orleans Brass Band Funk.

March Fourth Marching Band invaded the Gothic on Saturday just in time to get deep into the spirit of Halloween. There is no one else on the scene like this band right now and they deserve all the attention they’re getting. They put on a phenomenal show and left nothing to the imagination. Part Marching Band, part Big-Band Swing, part Funk, and part straight-up Vaudeville circus there was not one person in the crowd that seemed interested in leaving early for fear of missing another crazy act onstage.

Two weekends ago, Wakarusa, and it’s army of party people and music lovers, lit up Mulberry Mountain in Arkansas. With acts ranging from The Weir, Robinson, Greene Acoustic Trio, to the electro madness of Pretty Lights, the festival offered something for everyone. If you close your eyes, the music of March Fourth Marching Band can carry you from the streets of New Orleans to the streets of Rio de Janeiro and everywhere in between . Their dynamic percussion, plus driving brass, plus steady electric bass, equals a dramatic showcase of sound. The band got the party started out in front of the theatre but they did not stop there.
