Summergrind – August 16th – Gothic Theatre

On August 16th, droves of Denverites came out for the Punk/Ska/Rock extravaganza that is the SummerGrind festival. The one day event, featuring 25 bands spread across three venues on S. Broadway in Englewood, was jam-packed with great acts – including big names like Morning Glory, Reno Divorce and The Suicide Machines, and a whole deluge of amazing local acts, creating a perfect storm of musical mayhem. Though it was hot at the outdoor stage, the AC in the Gothic offered a welcome retreat into a whole other world of madness.

20 Questions with Synthetic Elements

Since 2001 local Punk-based band Synthetic Elements have been making the kind of music that makes a once-punker nostalgic for days past. Their high-energy tempo, entertaining lyrics and catchy vocal harmonies are as impressive as their technical prowess, on their four studio albums and in live performances alike. They met in high school and grew up as a band in Denver, and have worked just about every stage in town. We sat down with drummer Brett Carson to hear his answers to our 20 Questions.

Metalachi – June 20th – Marquis Theatre

In the shadow of Coors Field, and just down the street from the Denver Rescue Mission lies the Marquis Theater. Maybe it is good that the Denver Rescue Mission promises in neon that “God Saves”, because promoter Soda Jerk Presents keeps booking a steady stream of the Devils Music at the Marquis. Hell’s Belles, MF Ruckus, & The Dirty Femmes – November 2nd – The Oriental Theater

First Friday packed the sidewalks and bars along Tennyson as a healthy crowd filed into The Oriental Theater for a night of musical tributes (and at least one surprise guest). With The Dirty Femmes honoring The Violent Femmes, MF Ruckus nodding to Iron Maiden, and Hell’s Belles doing their best AC/DC impression, it was a night complete with sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll.
