Monophonics – March 3rd – Cervantes’ Other Side

Estimated read time 1 min read

Last Saturday, Monophonics rolled into town and took over Cervantes’ Other Side with their one-of-a-kind blend of 70’s Funk, Soul, and Rock. From the moment they took the stage, Kelly Finnigan and the rest of the band commanded the attention of every eyeball in the room. There were fists pumping in the air as they cranked through “There’s a Riot Going On” from their trippy 2012 gem In Your Brain, and when they slowed things down for “Beggin'” the lovers in the room got close.

Telluride Blues & Brews – September 18th-20th – Telluride Town Park

Estimated read time 8 min read

The Listen Up Denver! crew rolled into Telluride with one simple intention: Do not take this for granted. We were in Telluride! Man, it was amazing! The weather was epic, the beer flowed freely and the music, oh the music. The footprints of musicians including Rich Robinson, Sharon Jones, and Otis Taylor dotted the stage throughout the weekend, and while the sun warmed the day, clear and starry skies cooled off the evenings and the dancing lasted till the wee hours of the morning.

Denver Day of Rock – May 24th – 16th Street Mall

Estimated read time 1 min read

The 2014 edition of the Denver Day of Rock boasted one of it’s best line-ups to date and despite the threat of rain lingering for much of the afternoon the heavens didn’t open up until almost exactly when the festival was wrapping up. Throughout the day stand-out performances were the norm, but the Blues of Austin Young Band, the barroom Rock of The Hold Steady, and the vintage Funk and Soul of Monophonics really stole the show.

Galactic – February 16th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Galactic was the main attraction last Saturday at The Ogden, but opener Monophonics drew a hell of crowd and won over a legion of new fans. Once feet started moving they didn’t stop as these two powerhouse bands hit us with a one-two punch that made our legs quiver, and our ears ring. We were floored by the Funk, swept away by the Soul, and ravaged by the Rock…but we stood firm as the full force gale stormed from the stage.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Galactic – The Ogden Theatre – February 16th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Galactic was formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans, and they cut their teeth playing the biggest party in America: Mardi Gras. If you’ve never been to Mardi Gras this is about as close as you can get without actually going to The Big Easy, and this Saturday GALACTIC will be joined by San Francisco Funk masters Monophonics. So whether you love Funk, New Orleans, the San Francisco sound, or the whole pot of gumbo, this is a must see show!

Seven hours Southwest of Denver, nestled in a box canyon surrounded by steep cliffs and Aspen trees, lies an old mining town that has been the setting for many a magical musical memory. As its name implies, the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival was started 19 years ago to celebrate craft beer and a specific genre of music; but over the years the festival line-up has became more diverse, and this year’s festivities raised the bar and established Telluride Blues and Brews as a festival that ANY music lover would want to attend.
