PICK OF THE WEEK: Assembly of Dust – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom – Friday & Saturday January 17th & 18th

Estimated read time 1 min read

Over the last ten years Assembly of Dust has crafted a unique sound that recalls the likes of The Band, Traffic and Neil Young. They have taken that early 70’s Americana swagger, put their own funky spin on it. Hooky melodies, poetic lyrics, and a profound depth of musicianship prompted USA Today to say Assembly of Dust has what it takes to “dazzle the Alt-Country universe.”

Mumford & Sons – August 29th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Mumford & Sons set up shop at Red Rocks for two nights last week and invited Dawes, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Slow Club to join them. While the headliner’s setlists for the two nights were nearly identical, by all accounts the band wow’d the capacity crowds each evening and even those who attend both shows were blown away. Clearly forshadowing the release of their highly anticipated upcoming record, Babel, the group highlighted seven songs from the album that will be released at the end of the month.

The Avett Brothers – June 30th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

The Avett Brothers have permeated every corner of the music market, and the sold out crowd at Red Rocks reflected the nearly universal appeal this band has. Southern charm, pop-appeal, traditional instruments, sweet has honeysuckle harmonies, and arena rock energy swirled between the rocks, and blew over the nothing but smiles crowd like a full force gale…and we even got “Swept Away” during the encore.

Together, these three men burn up speakers and stages alike as they tour and play music for the fan faithful. Mando player Wayne Gottstine recently took some time to share with us at Listen Up Denver! about the documentary Never Make it Home, The Split Livers, Wakarusa, and why we should come out and see them this weekend.

Simone Felice – Simone Felice

Estimated read time 4 min read

15 years ago I was introduced to Simone Felice the poet. The upstairs room of Joshua’s Cafe in Woodstock, NY was dimly lit, and the dark and mysterious poetry of Felice filled the room as he was backed by a group of musicians. I left Joshua’s with a CD that night, and repeatedly listened to a poem about an opium den in New York City’s Chinatown. Although I had never experienced a narcotic high, hearing that song brought a wave over me. Even in the very beginnings of his musical journey, his words had power.
