The Motet & Lettuce – June 5th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

Red Rocks Amphitheatre has seen a lot of moisture over the past month so it wasn’t surprising when Friday’s much anticipated evening with Lettuce and The Motet began with another drenching monsoon thunderstorm that unleashed a brief but violent torrent of water, wind and lightning which sent fans scrambling as waterfalls cascaded off the rocks and turned the stairs into raging rivers of mud. It was truly a crazy scene but by 9:00 the storm had passed and fans slowly emerged from their caves, soaked but ready to dance.

The band brings an all-out-party to every show by pouring their hearts and souls into every note. No one really has any idea where front man Jonathan “Skippy” Huvard channels his soulful, whiskey soaked vocals and frenetic stage presence but the result is a blistering powerhouse of sound.

The Motet’s annual “musical costume” shows on Halloween have become something of an institution here on the Front Range with folks buying tickets early in the summer to make sure they don’t miss out on the madness. This year’s run kicked off on the 25th, stopped in Denver for two nights at The Ogden before heading up to Vail and finally wrapping up last night in Boulder. When all was said and done it was a fun and funky show and while it didn’t top “Funk Is Dead,” everyone in the room had smiles on their faces to the bitter end.

Packed full of choice covers, The Warren Haynes band served up a second helping of Soul on Wednesday night at The Ogden. Less gritty than Gov’t Mule, the band focused on the Soul and R&B side of Haynes passion and offered up some rich harmonies courtesy of keyboardist Nigel Hall and Alfreda Gerald, who did an incredible job filling in for the legendary Ruthie Foster.
