Broken Social Scene – October 5th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 6 min read

Broken Social Scene always seemed more like an idea than a traditional band. The Canadian collective was established as a gathering of like-minded artists in Toronto with a laissez-faire philosophy. The various “members” of the group were free to come as they were, when they wanted, and leave the same way. And it worked. For the first half of the first decade of the 21st century, the unofficial leader of this “scene,” Kevin Drew, brought together no fewer than twenty musicians to release three Indie Rock albums considered canon.

The Walkmen & Father John Misty – January 21st – The Ogden

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Ogden Theatre slowly filled in last Monday night for a show a lot of people had been looking forward to for months – two of 2012’s best indie rock acts on one bill. As show time neared, a healthy, though not sold-out, crowd of twenty and thirty somethings milled around, drinks in hand ready for a fun close to MLK Day. While Walkmen failed to wow the crowd, Father John Misty put on a hell of a stage show throughout the set with his strong, smooth vocals and his ridiculous drunk-white-girl dance moves.

On the heels of the meteoric surge in popularity Of Monsters and Men has experienced this past year as they rose from Icelandic obscurity to chart topping success in the US the sold-out Boulder Theater was packed with fans of the Icelandic pop folk group and their two unique and outstanding vocalists. The sound was good, the crowd was fun and loud, and the night was worth the cost of entry. Maybe even for those who bought tickets for a premium on Craigslist.
