“Denver’s Free Music Scene” – From Neighborhood Bars to the Levitt Pavilion

Estimated read time 5 min read

Good beer and good music. Both feed our emotions, evoking moods and feelings that are often times hard to express. Both can change a bad mood and make it happy or excited; both can change a light mood and make it more introspective and profound. Jason and The Punknecks – April 11th – The Lion’s Lair

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last week Jason and The Punknecks, the self proclaimed “Hillbilly Band of Sexy Punky Tonkers,” took the slightly elevated stage at The Lion’s Lair. The band has made a name for themselves with their DIY ethic and nearly seven years of non-stop touring. The L.A. via Nashville couple of Jason and Polly Punkneck have a sound that is reminiscent of early X. That said, their punk country sound is rawer and more dangerous than the songs of John Doe and Exene Cervenka.

Saturday’s bill at The Ogden Theatre could not have got any better . . . unless maybe you beer battered both bands, country fried them, smothered them in Sausage gravy, and served them with a cold bottle of Lone Star. Denver was the final stop on a Colorado leg of the Laughing and Crying Tour and Jim Heath, the Rev himself, took a few minutes on Thursday before taking the stage at The Fox Theatre in Boulder to talk to Listen Up Denver! about the new album, touring, and “California Gurls.”
