Is it the people? It’s all these things and more. Planet Bluegrass is one of the best places in the world and RockyGrass is another excuse to venture up to Lyons and bask in it’s amazing vibe.

From the opening notes of I’m With Her to the Bluegrass not Bluegrass of Punch Brothers, RockyGrass was a joy. There were smiling faces, the rush of the St. Vrain, and the sights and smells of the vendor area. The workshops inside the Wildflower Pavilion created an intimacy with the crowd, while the many shades of ‘grass on the bill echoed through the canyon and brought out the dancing spirit in everyone.

Trout Steak Revival has earned a place in the mountain states bluegrass scene, performing to sold-out audiences, winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, placing in the 2012 Rockygrass Band Competition, and even winning an Emmy Award. Now this tightly knit, hard-driving bluegrass band is celebrating the release of their new CD at the Bluebird on Friday.

The Folks Festival at Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, CO has always marked a high-point of the summer for many music fans, but last year, in early September, one of the most destructive floods Colorado had ever seen swept through the pristine grounds all but destroying this summer haven. If you love Rocky Mountain Bluegrass as much as we do, you’ve surely happened upon the skilled sounds of Trout Steak Revival. The quintet is making waves in our little pond with their elaborate harmonies, which are backed by strong instrumentation and impressive song writing abilities. While the group hails out of Denver, their music was inspired by what lies just beyond our city in the “misty high country” where they say the music was born. They started as an informal Bluegrass Jam group and have made huge leaps in years since.
