Galactic & The Greyboy Allstars – March 17th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last Saturday night, the Fillmore Auditorium was as full as I’d seen it in years as droves of tireless revelers showed up to support two bands who have both previously played sold-out headlining shows in Denver. It was St. Patrick’s Day, and although most of this crowd had been drinking all day under the bright Colorado sky, they definitely weren’t slowing down.

Slightly Stoopid & Cypress Hill – April 20th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 4 min read

Ahh 4/20 in Colorado, you can smell it in the air! With the recent passing of Amendment 64 Colorado has become a hot spot for all things “4/20 friendly” and this past weekend was a prime example. From the first ever Cannabis Cup hosted on U.S. soil, to Snoop Lion’s performance Friday night, to this amazing line up; Colorado has taken their stance on recreational Marijuana use and the word is out. Last Saturday there was no better place to be than Red Rocks as Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill took to the stage to celebrate what appears to be our new state holiday.

Reggae On The Rocks – August 25th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 9 min read

This year was the 25th Anniversary of Reggae on the Rocks, and the enthusiastic crowd was a mass of colors, smoke and smiles. There aren’t many opportunities for Reggae fans to gather here in Colorado, but man, did they come out of the woodwork for this one! Jamaican colors were worn by those not from Jamaica, and brightly colored shirts, knit caps and guerilla bush fighter fatigues worn by those who were. Reggae is revolutionary music, a music that talks of pain as well as joy, a music that is also a form of prayer. Reggae is spiritual music.

Westword Music Showcase – June 23rd – The Golden Triangle

Estimated read time 7 min read

The 18th annual Westword Music Showcase took over Denver’s Golden Triangle on the 23rd as 15 venues hosted hundreds of local and national bands in the 104 degree heat. On the blacktopped area in front of the main stage, people’s shoes sizzled in the sun and the music was as hot as the pavement. We sweated, smiled and danced to a wide array of sounds. The nationally touring acts on the main stage added power to the event, and the energy Girl Talk put out at the end of the night nearly surged the grid.

Karl Denson’s Tribute To The Beastie Boys – June 22nd – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

The building was electric; with a packed house of super fans singing along to a laundry list of Beastie bests, Kyle, OG, and DeLa of Slightly Stoopid handled their roles as MCA, Ad Rock, and Mike D perfectly. Their showmanship undoubtedly outshined the stage lights as Karl Denson and the rest of his “Tiny Universe” provided the musical backdrop for the best tribute we’ve heard since MCA’s tragic passing.

Matisyahu – The Wakarusa Interview

Estimated read time 7 min read

One challenge that comes from working a festival like Wakarusa is that you have to make sacrifices in order to meet obligations. Missing a good portion of SOJA, and Slightly Stoopid’s second set of the weekend, was well worth getting the opportunity to sit down with Matisyahu. This one-of-a-kind vocalist and songwriter took some time with Listen Up Denver! to talk about his upcoming album Spark Seeker, and to share his favorite Wakarusa memory.

It’s time for Part Two of the wonderful and wacky world of Wakarusa! PICK OF THE WEEK: Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe “Beastie Boys Tribute” – The Boulder Theater – June 22nd

Estimated read time 2 min read

Karl Denson is both a founding member of the Greyboy Allstars and frontman of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. Denson took the ‘West Coast Boogaloo’ style from the Greyboy Allstars, added some funk, hip hop and R&B elements, and KDTU was born. This week, KDTU is back on the Front Range with hometown pals Slightly Stoopid to pay a new tribute—this time to The Beastie Boys.
