Singer-songwriter John Moreland started writing songs when he was 10 years old, the same year his family moved from Kentucky, to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he still lives today. He turns 30 this year, but he’s been slinging songs for more than half his life. On Thursday, Moreland will grace the stage of The Hi-Dive and offer up the gorgeously plaintive songs that have earned him devoted listeners across the country.

Joan Baez – July 10th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 3 min read

A long line of silver haired patrons holding mini lawn chairs filed all the way around the corner and down Ninth Avenue last Thursday for folk legend Joan Baez. The singer-songwriter was in good spirits, full of energy and easily appearing ten years younger than seventy-three. She played an hour and half set consisting primarily of covers of her contemporaries leaving fans satisfied but slightly disappointed by the very tiny amount of her own work that she played.

Darrell Scott Talks Tim O’Brien, Telluride & Pete Seeger

Estimated read time 9 min read

Listen Up Denver! had the pleasure of speaking with Darrell Scott ahead of his Colorado mini-tour with Tim O’Brien in support of their 2013 album release “Memories and Moments.” Darrell is a stunning artist who is as at home writing, singing, and performing his own songs as he is playing guitar for artists like Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Robert Plant as a member of the Rock legend’s “Band of Joy.” His songs have been covered by a wide range of artists and he has released 11 albums, including three with Tim O’Brien.

Neither artist is a stranger to Colorado, but seeing them on the same stage back-to-back, with interviews in the mix, made for an extra special show for no more than 200 lucky fans.

G. Love & Special Sauce – March 16th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The day before Saint Patrick’s Day is what we Irish like to call Saint Practice day. It’s the day that we begin stretching our livers for the main event and judging by the sheer number of individuals in green and gold filling the floor of the Ogden, Denver must be 90% Irish. As G. Love spit out the verse “Leprechauns smoking that green shit down,” we all knew the Ogden was the place to be to ring in St. Patty’s Day proper.

Rocky Mountain Folks Festival – August 17th, 18th, 19th – Planet Bluegrass Ranch, Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 13 min read

I think it’s become a goal of the team up at Planet Bluegrass to out-do themselves from year to year with the line-up of the Folks Festival. While last year featured headliners Jackson Browne, The Weir Robinson Greene Trio, and Brandi Carlile, this year brought Iron & Wine, Amos Lee, and Lyle Lovett to the intimate stage by the river in Lyons and each one mesmerized and surprised as they entertained the sold-out crowd.

Estimated read time 5 min read

Justin Townes Earle is a legacy in the music world and he has inherited many things from his father, the legendary Steve Earle. When Justin Townes decided to follow in his father’s footsteps by stepping on to a stage, he also stepped into lifestyle of excess. Last year brought him to his knees in his personal life, but his musical career began to stand tall when the title track off of his 2010 release, Harlem River Blues, was chosen as song of the year by the Americana Music Association.
