BoomBox – January 5th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The basic boombox from the 70’s and 80’s consisted of an AM/FM receiver, a cassette player, and two speakers, all housed in a plastic or metal case with a handle that made it portable. While back then the boombox was an integral part of Hip-Hop by artists like Fab Five Freddy, Schooly D, and the Beastie Boys, today BoomBox is a Electro-Funk-Rock duo from Alabama and they tore up The Ogden for two nights last weekend!

March Fourth Marching Band – October 27th – The Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

March Fourth Marching Band invaded the Gothic on Saturday just in time to get deep into the spirit of Halloween. There is no one else on the scene like this band right now and they deserve all the attention they’re getting. They put on a phenomenal show and left nothing to the imagination. Part Marching Band, part Big-Band Swing, part Funk, and part straight-up Vaudeville circus there was not one person in the crowd that seemed interested in leaving early for fear of missing another crazy act onstage.

Estimated read time 7 min read

The 18th annual Westword Music Showcase took over Denver’s Golden Triangle on the 23rd as 15 venues hosted hundreds of local and national bands in the 104 degree heat. On the blacktopped area in front of the main stage, people’s shoes sizzled in the sun and the music was as hot as the pavement. We sweated, smiled and danced to a wide array of sounds. The nationally touring acts on the main stage added power to the event, and the energy Girl Talk put out at the end of the night nearly surged the grid.

The building was electric; with a packed house of super fans singing along to a laundry list of Beastie bests, Kyle, OG, and DeLa of Slightly Stoopid handled their roles as MCA, Ad Rock, and Mike D perfectly. 20 Questions With MTHDS

Estimated read time 4 min read

Denver’s MTHDS are reviving their Beastie Boys tribute show this week in honor of Adam “MCA” Yauch who passed away in early May and they took some time to answer our “20 Questions” as they prepped for the show. One read through this exchange and you’ll get a feel for what a witty, sarcastic bunch of guys that make up this group. From comparing themselves to The Partridge Family to claiming that John Denver is one of the best local bands on the scene right now, it’s clear that one of the only these guys take seriously is their music.

Deer Tick – May 13th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

When Deer Tick took the stage on Sunday night at The Bluebird, there were light bulbs that flashed the words “Deer” and “Tick” behind the band. Lead singer, and founder of the band, John McCauley was decked out in a fancy pink blazer and tie that was strangely appropriate for his band’s one-of-a-kind combination of blues, folk, country and in your face punk rock. McCauley’s gritty voice not only translated from record to stage almost seamlessly, but the emotional lyrics were brought to life in the live setting.

Rodina – May 10th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 6 min read

All we can say is…we just wish more people were there to see it. In its current formation, Rodina is a new endeavor, and considering the name has virtually no recognition yet, a fair amount of people showed up to check out this who’s who of local and international talent. It was a Thursday night, and the Nuggets were playing a crucial playoff game against the Lakers, but the almost 200 people who ventured out and took a risk on something new, were the ones who saw a truly championship performance.
