Rocky Mountain Folks Festival – August 17th & 18th – Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 8 min read

This year’s Rocky Mountain Folks Festival featured marquee names like John Butler Trio, Patty Griffin and John Prine but it was the lesser known acts like Seryn, Foy Vance, Nathaniel Rateliff and Charles Bradley that really wow’d the faithful crowd. Word on the street months before the festival was that the organizers and staff of Planet Bluegrass were more excited by the acts this year than they had been at any time in recent memory, and they just may have been right on!

The Staves – June 11th – The Hi-Dive

Estimated read time 4 min read

In most cases, a band with siblings merely plays out as an interesting footnote to a band’s biography, save for the instance where one sibling is trying to stab the other, or if plums are being thrown. Luckily, no disgruntled fruit was spotted anywhere near the Hi-Dive last Tuesday when The Staves made their first appearance in Denver to play most of their debut album, ‘Dead & Born & Grown.’ Their completely and utterly seamless vocals and self-deprecating humor endeared them to the small but appreciative audience very quickly.

Just outside of Fort Collins, four sisters fill a family home with sounds only siblings could make. The Milk Carton Kids – August 30th – Swallow Hill

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Milk Carton Kids put on an excellent show at Swallow Hill last week and they left people with non-stop laughs, even better sounding versions of their recorded songs, and a whole preview of a new album. The duo’s voices fit so well together it’s hard to believe that they could have never met. It was more than anyone could have asked for. In the past year acts like The Civil Wars have taken off and The Milk Carton Kids, based on the quality of their live work, should be the next folk duo to break into the mainstream.

The Civil Wars – May 23rd – The Ogden

Estimated read time 2 min read

When The Civil Wars walked out onto the dark stage of The Ogden last week, fans erupted with enthusiasm. The duo remarked “they could not believe that this was their first show in Denver” and “the city has such great people and food.” According to Joy Williams, the only thing that was lacking was oxygen, and she was not scared to admit that she had an oxygen tank on the side of the stage waiting for her because “that’s how hard we are about to folk.” These words would hold merit throughout the entire evening.
