Conor Oberst – June 30th – Ogden Theatre

Indie singer-songwriter Conor Oberst brought his country-tinged tunes to the Ogden Theater Friday night, showcasing songs spanning his career, from his most recent solo album, Salutations, to older songs from his time with his former band Bright Eyes. Along with his backing band, the Felice Brothers, Oberst delivered a powerful performance that captivated the crowd of mostly 20-somethings.

15 years ago I was introduced to Simone Felice the poet. The upstairs room of Joshua’s Cafe in Woodstock, NY was dimly lit, and the dark and mysterious poetry of Felice filled the room as he was backed by a group of musicians. I left Joshua’s with a CD that night, and repeatedly listened to a poem about an opium den in New York City’s Chinatown. Although I had never experienced a narcotic high, hearing that song brought a wave over me. Even in the very beginnings of his musical journey, his words had power.

The Felice Brothers – October 17th – The Hi-Dive

The Felice Brothers didn’t chat with the crowd last Monday at The Hi-Dive; there was a lot of agitation and rawness coming from the stage, as if their Americana punk was being played in a boxing ring. These guys are proud, authentic, tough, brilliant, raw, emotional, and real Catskill thugs. Their energy was infectious and intimidating. They played as if they preferred no one to be there, and we danced like we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
