PICK OF THE WEEK: Lettuce – Cervantes’ Ballroom – Friday May 31st & Saturday June 1st

Estimated read time 1 min read

Lettuce is getting ready to take Denver audiences to the cosmos this weekend with their high-octane funk. “Lettuce is like a Learjet that wasn’t getting clearance from the tower,” says “lead” bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes. “But we’re done just rolling around on the runway.” They’re not asking for permission, so put your tray tables in their full, upright and locked position. This plane’s itching for lift off!

Estimated read time 2 min read

Imagine blending the sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock, and reggae so seemingly it defies category. Now shrink that idea into a seven-piece ensemble, add a hip hop sensibility plus a hundred years of New Orleans jazz tradition, and you get the Louisiana sound known as The Soul Rebels. Along with Denver’s own Strange Americans, The Soul Rebels will help celebrate Marquee Magazine’s 10 Year Anniversary Party at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons, Colorado!

STS9 – December 28th – Private In-Store @ Twist & Shout

Estimated read time 4 min read

Back in December our own Brian Turk got an email from someone at Twist & Shout with an invitation to a private STS9 in-store show the night before the band kicked-off their three night New Year’s run at The Fillmore. Twist & Shout is known for their exclusive and memorable in-store performances, but this one was a going to be a bit different. The stripped down and intimate show showcased a more organic presentation of STS9 material, and revealed the foundation on which this Temple of Boom is built.

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – November 17th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 3 min read

When Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band took to the stage at The Bluebird they certainly confused more than one onlooker as there were only three people on the stage. There was Breezy Peyton on washboard and back-up vocals, Aaron Persinger on drums (a stripped down drum kit that included a 5 gallon plastic bucket), and Reverend Peyton himself on guitar. How could they call this a Big Damn Band? Where was the bass player, and the other guitar player?

Gramatik is headlining his first show at The Fillmore this Saturday night. With opening acts Talib Kweli and Mux Mool, it’s sure to be a night that lives up to Gramatik’s personal ability to move from one musical genre to the next. His new light design, inspired by infamous physicist Nikola Tesla is sure to be a highlight of this blowout. He was kind enough to take a few minutes away from his busy schedule to talk to Listen Up Denver! about the tour, his musical influences, and about his philosophy of giving away all of his music for free to fans.

Primus – November 3rd – The Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 4 min read

Primus has hit a lot of ears over the past 20 some odd years, and all types of folks packed the Fillmore last Saturday to see their favorite band in 3D sight and 4D sound. The crowd instantly reacted to the first couple notes of each song, and it was clear just how deep this band fan base goes. Bald Eagles and bubbles floated over the heads of the crowd on the Fillmore floor while Les Claypool’s bass hit us like a tidal wave. Primus is rock, they’re metal, they’re dark, and they’re funky. Primus is intense. “Primus Sucks.”

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals – October 26th – The Fillmore

Estimated read time 6 min read

If you combine Grace Potter’s decade of touring, the fact that she just happens to be blessed by the hand of god with a fine physical appearance, and her balance of raw and soulful vs.radio friendly songs, well, she can pull just about anybody out to a show and she proved that on Friday night at The Fillmore with the turnout and the diversity of the crowd. All ages and all walks of life came out for various reasons, but everyone wanted to get down…and we did just that. All damn night.

Rise Against – September 24th – The Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 4 min read

On a rainy Monday night last week, Rise Against assaulted a roomful of rabid fans at The Fillmore with a sound that straddled the line between Metal and Alterative. They blasted the crowd with images of political symbolism on giant LED screens and lead singer Tim McIlrath kept the crowd in the palm of his hand as he used the entire stage to dance, jump, and scream. Was it really a true “Punk” show? We aren’t so sure about that, but there is no doubt it was a high quality concert extravaganza!
