Sturgill Simpson’s ‘A Sailor’s Guide to Earth’ is the rare album that jumps from one style to the next, with ports of call in Motor City and Music Row, Harlem and Stax, Berlin and London, yet it never leaves Simpson’s very specific point of view.
For an artist who has spent the better part of 25 years enjoying success on the road and in the recording studio as a founding member of The Black Crowes, one could assume that leaving the nest might be a scary proposition for Rich Robinson. If the music on “The Ceaseless Sight” is any indication, Robinson is shaping an entirely new musical identity. We sat down with Robinson to get the story behind the album more.
Combining great music, craft beer and food, this year’s Snowmass Mammoth Fest featured the likes of Xavier Rudd, Leftover Salmon, Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang, Chris Robinson Brotherhood (just to name a few), a tasting from over 25 breweries and a chili cook-off. One of the best things about Mammoth Fest was that there was never a tight crowd. There were rolling hills around us and a herd of horses in the pasture beside. There was a little bit of something for everyone.
Saturday night was alive with the sound of Funk thanks to The London Souls and neo-jazz+funk band Lettuce. The intimacy of Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom was home to an invigorating late-night dance party that left everyone feeling especially groovy! With an undeniably electrifying jazz-funk that reeks of classic artists such as Tower of Power, James Brown and Kool & the Gang, Lettuce awed and exhausted us. This band is truly timeless and keeping the funk alive!
