Broken Social Scene – October 5th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 6 min read

Broken Social Scene always seemed more like an idea than a traditional band. The Canadian collective was established as a gathering of like-minded artists in Toronto with a laissez-faire philosophy. The various “members” of the group were free to come as they were, when they wanted, and leave the same way. And it worked. For the first half of the first decade of the 21st century, the unofficial leader of this “scene,” Kevin Drew, brought together no fewer than twenty musicians to release three Indie Rock albums considered canon.

The National – July 31st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

A slight sprinkle cooled the crowd at Red Rocks last Sunday as they waited for the evening’s entertainment to start. Many had arrived early having missed the email that pushed doors back an hour due to the production truck carrying the PA system being late to the venue, so tailgates lasted a bit longer than anticipated and more people got to see a relatively lack luster set from Real Estate that originally planned as the venue filled up early and stayed packed until the bitter end.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The National – Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Sunday, July 31st

Estimated read time 2 min read

Trouble Will Find Me, the most self-assured collection of songs produced by The National in its 14-year career, is a tribute to fully evolved artistic vision — and, somewhat less mystically, to sleep deprivation. Though the album is three years old now, the band is in as fine form as ever having spent much of the Spring and early Summer (when they weren’t playing festivals all over the world) in the studio recording the follow-up.

Over the course of five albums, including their new ‘Painting of a Panic Attack,’ Frightened Rabbit’s frontman Scott Hutchison has made poetry of his misery, and still somehow managed to make it sound anthemic — like a triumphant rallying cry rather than a downer. New York Indie Rockers Caveman will join Frightened Rabbit this Sunday at The Ogden Theatre making this a night of must see music!

Shaky Knees Festival – May 9, 10, 11 – Atlanta, GA

Estimated read time 9 min read

True sounds of American Alternative Rock rang from Atlanta, GA on May 9-11, 2014 at the Shaky Knees Festival. With headlining acts like The Violent Femmes, The Replacements, Alabama Shakes, and The National, the event drew large crowds and made good on the ticket, but the venue had ample space, sparing attendees the typical troubles of summer festival overcrowding. The line-up even featured some of Denver’s own musical talent, including singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov and Folk/Baroque Pop band Paper Bird.

Local Natives – April 26th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

A polite crowd of texting teens and twenty-somethings gathered at the Ogden Theatre on Friday to experience the sound of Local Natives, a sound that was relaxed but exuberant, with a driving but hazy tenor to it. The group delivered a noteworthy performance as fans used their various social outlets to share their excitement for the event. It was amusing on several levels, to say the least.
