Estimated read time 11 min read

A sold-out crowd braved the cold and the craziness of New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year with their favorite jamband stalwarts, Umphrey’s McGee at The Fillmore Auditorium. Judging by the long line that wrapped around the building before doors opened, anticipation levels were high to see what kind of celebratory shenanigans the band had planned. More than six hours after doors opened, the night came to a close and everyone was satisfied as 2016 got off to a raging start.

Freddi Gowdy and Chris Daniels: The Birth Of Cool In Colorado

Estimated read time 12 min read

When a fresh, exciting band called Freddi Henchi and the Soulsetters — fronted by Freddy “Freddi” Gowdy and Marvin “Henchi” Graves — came to Colorado in the early 1970s, a young musician named Chris Daniels was blown away by the sounds they brought with them. Now, more than 40 years later, Daniels has teamed up with Gowdy to release a new album that presents R&B and Funk in the way that it was intended to be heard. Celebrate the release of “Funky To The Bone” with them this Saturday at Herman’s Hideaway.

The Motet’s “Mixtape 1975” – November 1st – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Motet, the funkadelic Denver supergroup, played for a packed house this past Halloween weekend at the Ogden Theatre. The spooky tradition of covering an artist each Halloween weekend was broken last year when the band decided to play hits only from 1980 and this year they chose 1975. The show, dubbed appropriately “Mixtape 1975,” stayed true to the band’s Afrobeat heritage. As the band took the stage the buzz of the audience turned into raucous applause, eager for what was to come from this groovin’ group.

March Fourth Marching Band – October 27th – The Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

March Fourth Marching Band invaded the Gothic on Saturday just in time to get deep into the spirit of Halloween. There is no one else on the scene like this band right now and they deserve all the attention they’re getting. They put on a phenomenal show and left nothing to the imagination. Part Marching Band, part Big-Band Swing, part Funk, and part straight-up Vaudeville circus there was not one person in the crowd that seemed interested in leaving early for fear of missing another crazy act onstage.

Tower of Power & War – December 16th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Two classic bands joined forces to rock the Ogden on Friday night and while this wasn’t a young man’s evening out on the town, by all accounts the crowd got down and danced the night away as Tower of Power and War served up full sets of soulful, funky, hornlaced classics. While Tower of Power has a vast arsenal of hits like “Soul With A Capital ‘S’,” “What Is Hip?” and “You’re Still A Young Man,” War is probably best known for a pair of 1975 classics “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and of course “Low Rider.”
