PICK OF THE WEEK: Assembly of Dust – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom – Friday & Saturday January 17th & 18th

Estimated read time 1 min read

Over the last ten years Assembly of Dust has crafted a unique sound that recalls the likes of The Band, Traffic and Neil Young. They have taken that early 70’s Americana swagger, put their own funky spin on it. Hooky melodies, poetic lyrics, and a profound depth of musicianship prompted USA Today to say Assembly of Dust has what it takes to “dazzle the Alt-Country universe.”

Jeff Tweedy – December 5th – Paramount Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

Breath rose from shivering bones lined out the front doors of the historic Paramount Theatre last Thursday night. Fans emerged from beneath hats, scarves, and heavy coats as they entered from the zero degree tundra of 16th Street. Thursday night stripped away the guitar magic of Nels Cline and percussive poetry of Glenn Kotche and presented a grand opportunity to hear the songs of one of folk music’s most evolving musicians in the way they were written – just a man and his guitar.

Umphrey’s McGee – June 7th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 7 min read

Umphrey’s McGee made a triumphant entrance to the Red Rocks stage with Edvard Griegs’ epic “Hall of The Mountain King” blaring on the PA. With drummer Kris Meyers adding some thunder to the backing track and bassist Ryan Stasik pumping up the crowd with the two handed rock lock, the crowd quickly whipped into a frenzy and the band dropped into “Divisions.” This was a perfect way to get things going and the syncopated fireworks displayed by guitar players Jake Cinniger and Brendon Bayliss were a sign of things to come.

Umphrey’s McGee Talks Practicing, Budweiser and “The Reaper”

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last weekend Listen Up Denver! got the chance to sit down with Jake Cinninger, Kris Myers and Ryan Stasik of Umphrey’s McGee at sloppy mudfest that was Wakarusa. The band is celebrating their 15th year together and is thrilled to be taking the stage at Red Rocks again this summer. As the mainstage thundered away in the background, we talked about their favorite memories on The Rocks, their pre-show rituals and how much practicing it takes to maintain their incredibly tight performances.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – April 2nd – Pepsi Center

Estimated read time 1 min read

Bob Seger stopped into Denver on Tuesday night with veteran rocker, and longtime Eagle, Joe Walsh in tow. We were only approved for a photo pass, so here are some images from what was surely a great night of classic rock from one of the masters of the genre. Apparently he treated the crowd to many of the radio staples in his catalog including “Mainstreet,” “Old Time Rock & Roll,” “Like A Rock,” and “We’ve Got Tonight” but it was a cover of Wilco’s “California Stars” that really surprised us to read about.

PICK OF THE WEEK: JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – Larimer Lounge – Friday March 22nd

Estimated read time 2 min read

What does post-punk soul look like? Six and a half feet of raw emotion and sweat, with one leather boot planted in gutsy R&B, the other in taut minimalist grind. Snarling at the crowd beneath an afro pompadour, while indulging in a sly wink, singing to you directly, and here to make you dance. What does post-punk soul look like? It looks like JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound.

Railroad Earth – The Ogden Theatre – January 18th-20th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Railroad Earth is one of America’s greatest bands playing today, plain and simple. They sing of our nation’s changing landscape and social ills with a commitment reminiscent of Woody Guthrie, while interpolating instrumental timbres that could have been pulled from Celtic or Cajun culture. And as anyone who has caught them live will attest, their concerts are imbued with the fire-in-the-belly passion of straight-ahead, blue collar rock & roll.
