Sturgill Simpson – November 6th – Ogden Theatre

Soaked with whiskey, a brawl, and the deepest voice in country music, The Ogden Theatre was the place to be last Friday on night two of Sturgill Simpson’s stop through Denver. As expected, The Ogden Theatre most likely oversold tickets, and the room that had been sold-out for months was rocking and shaking. That said, a bummer of a light show only made the older, cranky crowd even more noticeable, and unfortunately the sold-out room was loud with talking throughout almost every song.

The Polish Ambassador – October 23rd – Fillmore Auditorium

The thing about The Polish Ambassador is that whether or not all of his fans are familiar with the beats he drops, one thing’s for sure – they’re all familiar with the positive vibes filling the air at every one of his shows. This was truer than ever on Friday night, as the night centered on a cause dear to Polish, Permaculture. The Permaculture Action Network connects the community by empowering people with the tools needed to live earth-based practices and bring about a regenerative way of living.

Telluride Blues & Brews – September 18th-20th – Telluride Town Park

The Listen Up Denver! crew rolled into Telluride with one simple intention: Do not take this for granted. We were in Telluride! Man, it was amazing! The weather was epic, the beer flowed freely and the music, oh the music. The footprints of musicians including Rich Robinson, Sharon Jones, and Otis Taylor dotted the stage throughout the weekend, and while the sun warmed the day, clear and starry skies cooled off the evenings and the dancing lasted till the wee hours of the morning.

Foo Fighters – August 16th – Fiddler’s Green

With a light mist in the air and clouds covering the sky, it was the perfect backdrop for one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the summer. Fiddler’s Green packed in quick, the grass inevitably got muddy, and the male-centric crowd buzzed around the beer vendors and quickly got settled in to kick-off a two night run with the Foo Fighters. This Foo Fighters’ show was one that won’t soon be forgotten and reminded many yet again why they love music – it truly touches people.

alt-J – July 27 – Red Rocks Amphitheater

Shows on Monday nights are usually referred to as “tough,” “inconvenient,” and even of the “take it or leave it” variety but the buzz on the way out of the venue last Monday was about this being the best Red Rocks show so far this summer. That’s a huge compliment when you consider the incredible headliners that have graced the Red Rocks stage recently. With a starry night, warm summer breeze, low humidity, no bugs…it was a “night on the Rocks” to remember!

Tedeschi-Trucks Band – June 13th – Red Rocks Amphitheater

While the finicky Colorado weather continues to hold out warmth and sunshine at Red Rocks, Saturday night brought one of the hottest bills of the summer. The “Wheels of Soul” tour paired Blues virtuoso Doyal Bramhall II with the retro-Soul review of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and the Blues/Soul hybrid of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks in the impeccably tight, Tedeschi-Trucks Band. Despite the cold, damp weather, it was a night to remember.

The Motet & Lettuce – June 5th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre has seen a lot of moisture over the past month so it wasn’t surprising when Friday’s much anticipated evening with Lettuce and The Motet began with another drenching monsoon thunderstorm that unleashed a brief but violent torrent of water, wind and lightning which sent fans scrambling as waterfalls cascaded off the rocks and turned the stairs into raging rivers of mud. It was truly a crazy scene but by 9:00 the storm had passed and fans slowly emerged from their caves, soaked but ready to dance.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band – March 7th – Gothic Theater

Robert Randolph and The Family Band are nothing short of extraordinary. True to their name, Robert has employed his real family members to create the soulful, upbeat Rock, Soul, Jam, Funk fusion he is known for. There aren’t many other bands that come together and produce such outstanding guitar riffs and unique Blues and Soul melodies. Though the Family Band is great, the main event all evening was Robert with his pedal steel guitar and unique gruff and falsetto singing. He engaged the crowd and kept them dancing.

Maceo Parker – October 19th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

Church was in session Sunday night as Maceo Parker and his band of Funk-fueled musicians took Denverites on a journey to the early days of Funk. The huge room at Cervantes’ was pretty empty early on, leaving those who arrived in time for Analog Son wondering why people were opting to stay in rather than see a legend like Maceo take the stage in such a small club. Halfway through the night, fans of the Funk had come out of the woodwork and the saxophone was preaching to the congregation.
