A Working Class Hero is Something to Be: Grant Farm Taps Into the Collective Subconscious with ‘Kiss the Ground’

Estimated read time 8 min read

Myth is a powerful thing and, contrary to popular belief, it is not dead. Myths are being made everyday and they still resonate with what Joseph Campbell called monomyth, a term he borrowed from James Joyce’s masterpiece ‘Finnegan’s Wake.’ Here in Colorado we like to think of these things, and recently Colorado based band Grant Farm has tackled these very issues with their new concept album ‘Kiss the Ground.’

PICK OF THE WEEK: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – Fillmore Auditorium – Saturday, December 19th

Estimated read time 2 min read

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is Scott Metzger, Tommy Hamilton, Dave Dreiwitz, Marco Benevento and Joe Russo. Not only does this quintet play tight and vicious versions of some of the most complex songs in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire, but they play them with a rawness & energy absent from the stage since the “Live” Dead era. More importantly, all of the jams are wild and incredibly adventurous.

Dead & Company – November 24th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 5 min read

Questions like “Should ‘The Dead’ be touring without Phil?”, “Why on earth did Bobby, Phil and Mickey choose John Mayer to fill Jerry’s lauded shoes?” and “I thought they said the Chicago shows were the last ones?” have been bubbling through Head circles for months. What this band made clear on Tuesday is that there is new reason to love The Dead, warts and all.

Railroad Earth – September 18th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 4 min read

There’s magic in the air when Railroad Earth comes to town. Last September the band produced a sweeping live film of their performance at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Needless to say it was a monumental show and this year would be hard pressed to surpass the energy and set list from the show that made fans swoon. Anytime you get to hear Railroad Earth play two sets it’s a special experience for the band and attendees but the 2014 Red Rocks set a standard that is difficult to match.
